Started adding and correcting street names in central Khartoum, did a track for Rufa'a in central Sudan, added Khartoum-Medani highway

I've got some traces that I have started mapping out in Josm. I updated to the latest version, but now it's not using my presets file, which makes it trickier to tag things. I'll at least gets some ways in for now.
I was alerted by another local mapper (nm7s9) to the fact that it is recommended that we shouldn't use abbreviations for road types (i.e. no St, Rd, Ave, Tce, etc, etc). Unfortunately this is excactly what I was doing :-(.
I've just gone through and changed all the ways I've done. It took a few hours but now I'm sure that every way I've ever done is named properly. Thank god for JOSM's ability to save to an OSM file, and thank god for grep!
Lucky it was slow at work today ;-)
Whow. That was difficult to find my own diary. Now that I got it though, will try to use it in a usefull manner.
Therefore the following question: In Belgium we have a lot of streets in cities which have one lane, than parking spaces on the side and after that a cycling track and pavement. How do i tag these? Simply mark the cycling way on the street, or should the it have it's own segments? And, if I add it to the street itself, do i mark it as a lane or as a track?
Greetings from a brand new user.
After a puncturedisaster last time, a more successful visit this occasion on a glorious summer Sunday afternoon. Completed the large village of Sawston, plus missing detail for the small village of Pampisford, which completes that. And the streets either side of Whittlesford station before catching the train back from there.
Making more progress in mapping Foster City, CA (USA), it's become evident that when creating ways of roads with bridges or tunnels (or any other segment that needs to be tagged in another way), it's easier to make the whole road one contiguous way, tag it with the correct highway type and street name, and then go back later to add in any bridges.
Insert any points needed to make the bridge begin and end at the right place, and then split the way on each side of the bridge, and then add the bridge and layer tags to the newly created way.
I was early to meet a friend this evening and so did a bit of driving around one of the housing estates in Douglas, Isle of Man, somehow managing to get myself lost in there momentarily. Those road warrens can be so confusing at times!
Just back from celebrating my 40th in Peru. I made 3 traces while there -
Cusco to Machu Picchu by train
A loop from Cusco to the Sacred Valley and back
A walking route around the ruins at Pisac
I've started to add the train route to Machu Picchu - this is an interesting route because the train goes through points into a dead end and then the points are switched and the train goes on to climb up the hill.
I've gone off my bike a bit after finding the gears a bit awkward to change. Also had a minor fall after handle bars came loose while trying to do a tight turn in a cul-de-sac.
My main reason for not doing anything about it right now is that in 3 weeks I have the equestrian vaulting National Championships in Moreton Morrell (which will be, at least partly, in OSM in 3 and a half weeks). One of the main requirements of the sport is a high level of flexibility (in the sense of being able to lick one's shins). Unfortunately, the small range of movement involved in cycling means that muscle develops short in length, so reducing flexibility.
So in an attempt to get slightly better scores at this competition I'm not going to be mapping for a while. Probably.
Been updating a few street names in the places I have lived. Added the odd road aswell. Had trouble splitting an existing road that was incorrectly marked as continuing in on to a side street.
Traced most of Khartoum central market and Republic pakace small streets
Just come back from a week's (very enjoyable, if wet) cycling around Brittany: roughly, St Malo-Dinard-Cap Frehel-Plancoet-Dinan-Combourg-Fougeres-Antrain-Pontorson-Mont St Michel-Dol de Bretagne-Cancale-St Malo.
It's going to take a while to map, even given that I didn't note down street names, just road numbers. But much of Brittany's a blank canvas on OSM at the moment, and it's rather fun drawing a line through "unknown territory" like that - it's been a long time since I've been able to do that in the Cotswolds!
Have stumbled across the Potlatch "start new way from end of old way" bug again, and there seems to be another one if (somehow) you manage to click the end of a way twice in such a fashion that it doesn't register as a double-click. And I'm still unsure what I should do next: POIs? undo? all-singing, all-dancing new tag-editing panel?
Reykjavik central is really really close to fully surveyed. It's taken a week, and a lot of mornings driving around and then mapping, but we're now only a couple of survey spots off having all of town north of Hringbraut and west of Kringlumýrarbraut mapped out.
Vesturbær is finished, (streets, names and oneway sections)
Tún is finished
Teigar is finished
Lækir is finished
Múlar is finished
Háaleiti North is finished
Austurbær, including þingholt, holt, and hlíðar has a couple of gaps, mostly due to roadworks. I'm not even going to try and finish off the sections around Lindargata at the moment, it's just a mess. Just a couple of streets on Þingholt and a portion of Hlíðar south. weee!
What does that leave us with? Sundahöfn and surrounds, Skeifan (what a jungle) and landuse and info. We still need to properly split up all the divided roads and fix the intersections, which is going to be a bit tedious.
As for me, I'm off out of town next week, so Reykjavik will be left to the masses for now.
Big mistake!
What was I thinking when I suggested that we map the coastal path from Teignmouth to Dawlish? Next time I get enthusiastic, I'll wait until the holiday season ends and the weather is a little less warm. Thank goodness for public transport - we didn't have to make the return journey on foot!!
It was a job well done though. We used the latest OSM map downloaded to the PDA plus, being able to overlay the track onto the map and have it 'track' with us, we were able to clarify a few anomolies and include a tunnel for the railway line.
I found the OSM site (from StumbleUpon) and I liked the idea. I like maps and I like the idea of Wiki et al. I have a Garmin ETrek, so I make the tracks etc. but the process looks a bit daunting ...
The village I live is not on the map yet, so it looks a good place to start.
I'm going to walk around gathering some tracks and see what happens next.
I've been on holiday earlier this summer in Madeira and recorded some tracks there that I've uploaded. They are mostly from Funchal, but also some roads around the island. I have traces some of the roads but not all.
I've just returned from the West Country on the Train from Penzance to London and was tracking the journey on my PDA with Osmerander moving maps. The cross hair was spot on the black railway line until we approched Weston Super Mare, where it suddenly veered of to the right into white space. Apperently, if the train is not scheduled to stop at WSM it uses a short cut link line, and sure enough that link is missing on the map.
Fortunatly I had the track log recording, so I can put it right.
Using OSM tile maps on a PDA it was so easy to spot.
Just discovered this wonderful site, realy amazing.
Have been looking for street detail info on Sudan for a very long time without success which is a little strange regarding all the buz about Sudan, Darfur...
So I am starting to map the whole country city by city, hopefully will get some assistance from the community
There's a stretch of a few city blocks in El Paso, Texas, on North Mesa just East of I-10, that isn't rendering in Mapnik. It's fine in OSMArender. Any ideas?
To Lavenham today. Got traces of a couple of minor roads on crosscountry bouts between villages, Great Thurlow area. Also added more points to A1307 which was already done but lacked detail.
