S'pose I'd better use this diary for once, I'll see if I can import it into my main blog sometime..

I've been idle for sometime, since school has restarted my time has been eaten up by schoolwork and other such boring things.

But, the times I did get to go mapping I mapped a nicely large swathe of Carshalton, Beddington and North Wallington. I'm now slowly moving westwards towards Sutton. When that area is done I'll move south again and tackle the south of the railway line in Wallington.

I also need to check the roads traced by the Beddington BedZed mapping party a few months ago - there's some roads missing from there, I think.

Annoyingly I tried using potlatch to map my school's buildings in a fairly high detail last week. Potlatch seems to have added 10 segments over each other in places due to upload errors. It took me a couple of hours to fix it all in JOSM.

Hope to get out mapping again soon.

Thanks to boaconstrictor, the data for Greenland, Delima region is available. He (or she) used Potlatch to make a rough mapping, while I cleaned it up using JOSM. currently I have finished cleaning Gelugor Roundabout and Jalan Masjid Negei. There are tons of data to clean up still.

I am extremely unhappy about the speed at which osmarender (online) render and update the tiles, even if I requested it.

I have also finished the some parts of route 3113: Jelutong Expressway, Bayan Lepas Expressway and others. Due to the lack of a reputable map, I am unable to find names for certain stretch of the highway. I have tagged those with Not Known.

I have also entered note for most of the routes I map. Note tags contain specific markers or certain clues or todo to let people know what needs to be done.

1994, my first GPS and an idea to create a map of walks in Italy. Not much progress. 2004 a return to Italy, Umbria this time and another project to write up the walks. 2005 a new GPS, a digital camera, and some notes. 2006 more GPS tracks, more photos. June 2007 more tracks, and some photos uploaded to Flickr. Sept 2007 three years of track logs uploaded to OSM: London to Umbria, around and about, Umbria to London.

Application error
Change his error message for excepton thrown outside of an action (like in Dispatcher setups or broken Ruby code) in public/500.html

mmmh.. seems to be an error on openstreetmap.org.

Perhaps they create a possibility to upload the gpx data directly from the PDA.

eg. using a sub-domain: upload.openstreetmap.org

Just looked at the render of my local area and noticed a couple of things

1. There are roundabout icons on the mini-roundabouts, but they go the wrong way for the UK. Not sure what could be done about that as most countries drive on the right.

2. All the roads have a (c) tag. I assume this indicates who added them. I suspect it doesn't really mean Copyright

I've been playing with this software on my Pocket PC, but have some issues that I'm trying to figure out with help from the author. It has the great feature of being able to display OSM tiles and overlay what you are logging. My problem is that the map position tends to lag behind where I actually am.

I started a wiki page for the app. It's already getting some feedback.

Been playing around with OSM-- trying to create at least the route I take to work and the landmarks along the path. Guess I have a bit to learn..
Added a park-- learning to enclose the non-default-land on the right (so, for islands, CCW; for lakes, CW).

I may begin working on the coast lines of Galveston. Wonder when my modifications will show up on OSM.

I've had a message from 80n about mapping Hull. Originally I thought I'd stick to the East Riding, but now I've done some work in Hull. It's fairly close to home and there are a number of challenges.

Firstly the railway stopped short of the station, which is a terminus. I found as many places as possible to access the railway, such as bridges and roads alongside the track and I've mapped some of the tracks, including goods lines.

I've also looked up the boundary between Hull and the East Riding from info from both councils. I've traced most of it on the ground so I can draw the boundary. Of course both of these projects have mapped roads too and I've added some streams too.

I'm finding the API server incredibly slow sometimes, so it can be frustrating. I guess funds are tight, but a bit more power is needed. A lot depends on the server, all editing downloads and uploads (JOSM, Potlatch etc.) rely on it and every tile that gets rendered needs it too. It could be the MySQL server that is the bottleneck, but whatever I feel it could endanger the project because people might give up.

I've also gleaned a list of all of the towns, villages etc in East Yorkshire. I wondered if I should post it in Wiki as a means of tracking progress, but since there are only a couple of people working in East Yorkshire it is maybe OTT.

OK, had to drive into work this morning, so I took the opportunity to get some traces round and about Farnborough (Hampshire).
Mostly driving round odd bits of housing estates in the Southwood area near my office.
Will have to wander out with my notebook and jot down the street names that I can't remember over the next couple of days.

Also did a few roads in the industrial estate off Morden Road, South Wimbledon on my way home.
