Who am I?
OSM mapper in north county Dublin.
Any spots I’m mapping in particular?
- Swords, Co. Dublin
- Dublin City
- Anywhere with a surveillance camera lmao
Do I know what I’m doing?
Kinda? I’ve used StreetComplete enough to get it to do what I want, but as I write this it’s my first day using iD, the in-browser editor to clean up some notes I’ve put on the map and add a few houses and buildings that we missing/inaccurate.
I’d say I know enough to tick the review box when it’d be wise and leave it unticked when I’m not going to break stuff. And I’m content to read the docs and to just leave something alone depending on what’s going on.
Weird gripes?
- “Does this bus stop have a rubbish bin?” quests when the map has a rubbish bin not 2 metres away. What value is there is asking that?
- No tutorial for taking a track made in StreetComplete and saved as a note to be edited and submitted by iD. Some footpaths are obscured by tree cover so recent sat photo won’t help; and those tracks from SC just appear as a wiggly line, stripped of location, treating them as usable data isn’t self evident.
- When adding an object via StreetComplete, the last object added isn’t given a shortcut. Adding 4 surveillance cameras? You’d better like pasting “surv” into the field over and over.
Really most stuff just works on this project, but if you’re not learning from someone else who’s already an experienced user it’s rough figuring things out alone.
IMO design decisions revolve around giving experienced users what they want and not around making new users learn what they need without frustration so they’ll stick around.
