It's great that you've mapped more details (roads, works...) on Red Scar.

The whole of Red Scar is already mapped as an industrial estate, so adding extra smaller landuse=industrial areas on top for each individual unit is unnecessary and can create problems. If an area has a landuse tag it doesn't need another.

I agree with John on this.
The fact that a Wiki editor thinks that you should use highway=footway for urban paths doesn't mean that highway=path has to be used for non-urban paths. Choice between 'Classic' (highway=footway/bridleway/cycleway) and 'Alternative' (highway=path) tagging methods has always been a matter of personal choice (osm.wiki/United_Kingdom_Tagging_Guidelines#Classic_vs_Alternative_tagging_schemes )
In the UK footway has always been by far the most commonly used tag for both urban and rural footpaths.

Bearing in mind that by default highway=footway and highway=path imply different levels of access (osm.wiki/OSM_tags_for_routing/Access-Restrictions#United_Kingdom), it is inadvisable to set about 'correcting' other people's footways to paths, especially without verifying on the ground and adding the access tags the highway=path system of tagging was designed to utilise

Welcome to OSM Andrew,

Is osm.org/way/528193161 really called "Hotel". We only use the name tag for the actual name of something (if indeed it has one). To show that a building is a hotel you can add the tag tourism=hotel.

One other tiny point, it makes it difficult for other mappers to see what's going on if changesets include edits spread across very large areas (such as multiple countries). The in browser editor (iD) automatically starts a new changeset for each save, so please just try to save whenever you've finished editing in one area, before you move on to the next area.

Hi Penny. Welcome to OpenStreetMap. OSM is a map showing what exists on the ground, not a business listings site.. Is there a childcare facility at this location where people can take their children to be looked after? If this is the private residential address which you run your business from, it shouldn't be mapped as a childcare facility in OSM.

Hi Tom,
Back alleys are not classed as residential streets in OSM. We use the tags highway=service and service=alley. If possible, it is also worth adding an access=yes tag if the public can travel along the alley or an access=private tag if only residents are allowed.

Is it a very long minor road, one which crosses the Atlantic? :)
Please don't change change things on different continents all at once in the same changeset because it makes it very difficult for local mappers to see what is being changed.

PS. In the UK the living street tag is only used for (rather rare) specially designated streets signed as home zones, shared use or play streets. I suspect that all of Tattersall Road should just be tagged as a residential road.

Hi, I also hope you contribute again. The in-browser editors do make it quite easy to get started mapping. As you are aware though, these huge, endless projects can be addictive! Good luck :)

Following that discussion, I've changed the tag from name to alt_name. It will still be in the osm database for people who search for it, but it means that road users won't be confused by directions to something which isn't named on the ground.
The signs on the ground show it to be considered part of the M61 so I've changed the ref tag back to M61.

Oh, and welcome to OSM. I am sorry that I didn't realise that you were a new contributor. Purely descriptive names for unnamed objects are generally disliked in OSM, but this is an odd case because it does seem to have some use in enthusiast circles. There is a tag for local names, but that doesn't really fit here (I worked a few hundred yards away for several years and have never heard anybody refer to it as the Walton Summit Motorway). I've asked the OSM UK mailing list for others' thoughts on the best solution: https://lists.openstreetmap.org/pipermail/talk-gb/2017-May/020281.html

This name has been added and removed before. It is not an official name, merely a convenient descriptive name used by road enthusiasts. See here: http://pathetic.org.uk/secretive/walton_summit_motorway/

I can't find these paths on any OS Open Data map so I've assumed that an unacceptable source map was used. Rather than delete the paths outright I've aligned them to the paths shown on the only acceptable source mapping I could find (old out of copyright OS 1:25k). A FIXME tag has been added so that they can be more accurately mapped by a local mapper.

Whilst new contributors are always welcome we cannot use information copied from copyrighted Ordnance Survey maps except old maps which are out of copyright and those maps OS have released under their Opendata licence egs. Open Data Streetview, Open Map Local, Vector Map - District etc. We cannot use their commercial maps egs. 1:25k Explorer, 1:50k Landranger. Unless you can confirm which maps you have used these paths will need to be deleted.

Hi,
Welcome to OSM. A football pitch is tagged as leisure=pitch and sport=soccer. An unnamed feature like a football pitch doesn't need a name tag. As the pitches are part of the park they should be within the park area.
