Firefox 3.5 Geolocation

How on Earth would it use WiFi signals? Using the mobile phone network I could understand as you can triangulate if the phone is getting a signal from 3 or more towers, but WiFi has no geographic data attached to it.

Hi

...there are many like it, but this one is mine.

Welcome to OSM :).

Easy going riding day

Cheers. Didn't try it because so many online posting pages screen out HTML.

Leaving unfinished streets

Wow, that explains why you could collect street names so much faster than I could.

Rockhampton

Oh, and you might want to check the maplint layer. There's a large section which is coming up as "nodes on same spot", it's like the area was uploaded twice. The JOSM validator can fix that error easily I think.

Either way, nice work :). There aren't too many untraced areas like this left in AU anymore.

Rockhampton

Alignment isn't a big issue so long as it's known that it was all done from Yahoo imagery. Basically when somebody does a few streets with a GPS they can just move the whole area to align with the recent traces.

Leaving unfinished streets

I've thought of sealant. What pressure do you run? I can see it working in a 40psi MTB tyre but not in a 125psi road tyre. I might try those re-reinforcement strips next. It's all just more money though :p.

NSW Riverina

It's amazing what can be mapped sometimes. I was really shocked to see how much detail there was in the Lithgow/Bathurst/Orange area. Then there's more random patches of extreme detail popping up in unlikely places too: osm.org/?lat=-28.8406&lon=152.4636&zoom=13&layers=0B00FTF

Why did I start with Lismore Heights?

Yeah, even if it was a mistake. It's fun to map an area almost completely from GPS tracks. I've been a bit spoiled by the Yahoo coverage in Newcastle.

can use usgs doq data for mapping

Fair enough, given that it's public domain as opposed to some form of nonrestrictive license. What I quoted above though is the standard request of OSM when entering any data though.

can use usgs doq data for mapping

Attribution probably means that they require you to add a source=US_Geological_Service to any node/ways added or modified based on the information contained in the imagery they provide.

Pram mount for GPS

I've used a cheap MP3 player (~$25 Phillips one) and the audio recording is fine for OSM use. Just take note that they don't do any timestamps (that I'm aware of) so you'll need to manually align the audio or mark waypoints and make the recording something like "waypoint 25: Smith Street".

HOW CAN AN OSM MAP BE UPLOADED TO MIO C220

Hi there, great to see OSM contributors all over the world :).

Basically only the Garmin (and possibly Tom Tom and Magellan) map formats have been reverse-engineered so currently OSM can only be loaded onto a Garmin GPS unit in the native Garmin format.

For your GPS your best bet would be unlocking it to allow access to the generic Windows CE environment within the unit, then install something like Gosmore onto it.

Basically, it's not easy. Hopefully somebody else has more information.

Upcoming pizza meetup for Brisbane, Australia

Hmm, I'd be interested in meeting up with the Brisbane mapping community during my 10-12 week stay in Lismore, but it's a fair way to go for a mainly social event.

Hope you get a good turnout though!

Into Outback New South Wales

More traces right we we need them :). It's great to see fellow Aussies traveling to far out places to map. Hope you have a good trip and end up with a stack of good data to contribute :). It's amazing how many of the smaller NSW towns are now mapped.

Bike recommendations

That's not a bad thing, the weight you lose by not eating will help you ride further :).

3.5miles/5.6km isn't all that far though, just get what feels "right". Lots of little things will wear out and be replaced anyway. In the end 90% of the riding efficiency is in the tyres, so even a cheap bike with the accessories + better tyres will be good.

Like if you don't like the rear cassette don't fret too much because in 1500-3000km it'll be worn out and you'll need a new one anyway :p.

My little bit

I wish more people would blog on here. It may seem nerdy, but it's interesting to read about the efforts of others :).

OSM History Viewer

Thanks :) Starting the number with a # worked! It's really picky though, like if there's any whitespace on the end of the number it won't work. Well, at least when I copy+paste from a changeset list there tends to be an extra non-printable character on the end that needs to be ^H'ed before it'll work.

Taking another chunk out of Maplint

Hey man,

You guys have some seriously dedicated mappers down in VIC too ;). I was amazed at the level of completeness around traralgon, especially in the fire trails. And that was a good year ago now to boot. OSM was seriously useful on my Winter holiday down there, especially when I had to trek up to Traralgon to find the nearest Centerlink and Caltex (company charge card).

I was staying in Langsborough at the time and mapped Port Albert: osm.org/?lat=-38.66887&lon=146.69215&zoom=15&layers=B000FTF

Yarram (~10km North of Port Albert) still needs work, I only got time to survey the Eastern side.

It looks like the ABS boundaries are a great source for the coastline and islands around there, if you want some semi-local armchair mapping to do ;).

I remember there being a sign in Port Albert which defined some marine boundaries in terms of lat/long, that would be worth putting in too although I didn't photograph the sign.

If you give some warning of a trip up here we can try to organise a mapping party for POIs or detailed park surveys etc. There's a discreet lack of interested mappers around here!

Download OSM-chart intended route-Download map and route to GPS?

Well since nobody has tried to answer you I'll give it a crack.

Basically OSM will provide your GPS with a detailed basemap. Essentially an image that your GPS can display behind the "current location" marker.

NB: I've not researched the capabilities of your GPS units, so I don't know what is possible with them, but below is a rough guideline.

If you want to route on this map you have 2 options:

1) Download a routable Garmin map based off OSM and let your GPS do the routing. There were maps available for download but the site seems to be down. Some information about this, including how to make them yourself, is here: osm.wiki/Routable_garmin_maps

2) Download a non-routable Garmin map (info in the wiki: osm.wiki/OSM_Map_On_Garmin) and do the routing yourself manually by using Garmin MapSource to plot a route then upload it to your GPS unit.
