Up and down the Don

Posted by Brian Ronald on 7 January 2017 in English.

Spent today on my bike taking geotagged photographs of a local river. Every error along my way, then back home to spend time in JOSM, fixing each one.

The trouble with data imports from sources like the OS is that it just lands on top of the map. Sorting that out is as good an excuse as any for roaming around my local area on my bike taking pictures!

New bike

Posted by Brian Ronald on 22 December 2016 in English.

So last year I bought a new bike. I use it to commute between Jarrow and Gateshead, and on weekends I often join a social group ride from the Newcastle quayside, to various destinations. I’ve taken to tracking my rides with my phone (it’s so convenient now that GPS is all built in) and I’ve been tweaking and updating my local area.

If you see somebody on a green Brompton in the area, do wave!

Hazelmoor

Posted by Brian Ronald on 21 March 2010 in English.

I was taking a walk from my house roughly along the river Tyne yesterday. In Hebburn, I saw a street leading down toward the river itself. There was no information on OSM for that area, so I didn't know if it went anywhere. I decided that if it did, I'd continue my walk, and if it didn't, I'd map the area. So, I started a GPS trace and started to walk down Cavalier View.

It didn't go anywhere but to a padlocked gate, where there was once a dock of some sort. There was a complicated little cul-de-sac named Hazelmoor there, so I walked around its perimeter, then back up Cavalier View. The street was added last night. There are two other similar roads down there, but it's not somewhere I often find myself, so others will probably have to complete the job.

The weather was awful, with constant drizzly rain. GPS reception was excellent despite this (and despite being beneath my big brolly).
