Hi, I’m CAM Gerlach! I grew up in Alexandria, Virginia near Washington, DC; went to undergrad for degrees in meteorology and geography (GIS concentration) at Virginia Tech in Blacksburg, Virginia and then grad school for atmospheric science at University of Alabama Huntsville in Huntsville, Alabama, where I still reside. These are the primary three areas I’ve been focusing on mapping thus far, but also occasionally map areas I travel to or spend/have spent significant amounts of time.

My main interests are on improvements that provide the highest value to the most map consumers relative to the time investment, particularly in adding missing routable ways and tags for driving, walking and cycling modes, junction controls and crossings. In the areas I map, I also perform cleanup of way nodes and hierarchy, fix map quality issues, particularly those impacting connectivity and resolve notes. I also often add Wikipedia/Wikidata links and related tags, and where feasible will spend time adding/fixing building and POI locations and tags, with a particular focus on addressing. Finally, I regularly monitor map changes in my regions of interest, to see what others are mapping, check for any mistakes or inconsistencies with my changesets, and be on the lookout for any by others.

I’m currently an open source software developer and maintainer of the Python programming language and the Spyder scientific environment, along with other packages, and help run Star Fleet Tours, which provides rocket launch viewing trips and educational experiences in Cape Canaveral, Florida and now Boca Chica/Starbase, Texas.
