1741334 | Jarek 🚲 | Request for comments: I have suggested a guideline to not expand "St"/"St." to "Saint" in Ontario when it is signed as "St"/"St." on street name signs in real life. The foremost reason is difficulty verifying correctness of the name other than what is posted on the sign. For instance St. Clair Avenue here is apparently not named after a saint, but after a book character whose last name was spelled "St. Clare" with "St.". In many cases it is difficult to determine if the street was named after a saint, or a British locality which had name spelled with "St", and determining that for all streets in question really doesn't scale. Hence the proposal to adopt on-the-ground rule for "St." in street names. I am limiting this suggestion to Ontario as I am not familiar with naming practices in other provices (other than being aware that French uses "Saint" spelled out). Please see discussions on the mailing list https://lists.openstreetmap.org/pipermail/talk-ca/2019-March/thread.html#9179 and https://lists.openstreetmap.org/pipermail/talk-ca/2019-April/thread.html#9262 If you have opinions on this, you can write them here and I am happy to cross-post them to the mailing list. |
