Kaanapali Beach

Posted by Icycle on 26 November 2009 in English.

Black Rock at Kaanapali Beach is one of my favorite places in the world to snorkel. This beach, and the dive site have been added to the map.

Filling in all the resorts, their associated buildings, footpaths, parking structures, and so on, is a huge task, and is no going to get done by me, at least not today. :)

Kīpahulu

Posted by Icycle on 25 November 2009 in English.

The Kīpahulu area is a remote outpost of the Haleakalā National Park, beyond Hāna, and famous for it's "Seven Sacred Pools", more properly known as ʻOheʻo Gulch.

I spent my second night of camping at the newly reopened campsite here. While here I hiked a small portion of the extensive trail network.

My mapping efforts today include the portion of the trail network that I hiked, most of the major manmade features in this part of the park, and most of the major natural water features.

It is noteworthy that this park has no potable water available. Is there any convention for noting such a fact for a campsite. Perhaps "water=no"?

Hāna

Posted by Icycle on 25 November 2009 in English.

Hāna was made famous as the destination of the Road to Hāna. In reality it is just a tiny little outpost on the easternmost tip of the island of Maui.

There isnʻt much to the town, so I have mapped many of the few notable things in town: Hasegawa General Store, the Hana Ranch Store, the town's two beaches, and the footpath to the clothing-optional red sand beach.

Waiʻānapanapa State Park

Posted by Icycle on 25 November 2009 in English.

My first night of camping on Maui was at Waiʻānapanapa State Park, just a few miles outside of Hāna. This pretty little park has a black sand beach, lava tubes, and ancient trails. I only had time and energy to enjoy a small portion of what this park had to offer.

I also have come to realize that the TIGER 2009 road data for the area in the immediate vicinity of the park has some serious errors, based on my recollections, the satellite images, and my GPS tracks. Unfortunately the information I do have is not enough for me to correctly reconstruct the proper road network in this area, so I hope that someone else will come along and do a comprehensive resurvey of this area.

Maui Bike Paths

Posted by Icycle on 25 November 2009 in English.

This past summer, I went on a fully loaded bike tour of Maui and Big Island in Hawaiʻi. The first leg of my trip on Maui was going to be along the Hana Highway from Kahului to Hana. Just before I set out, I stopped for coffee at a Starbucks, and while I was there, a fellow cyclist (though not in my same cycling tribe), told me about some bike paths that stretch from Kahului Airport to Sprekelsville. As anyone who as visited Maui knows, Hana Highway has some moderately heavy tourist traffic, so this was a pleasant discovery.

The entryway to the bike path was a bit hard to discover, since it is poorly signed. In fact, since it is immediately adjacent to the airport, there are quite a lot of sternly worded No Trespassing signs that you are supposed to ignore, as I found out by asking a nearby policeman for directions. :)

There is another short segment of the bike path right next to Pāʻia, but it isnʻt very useful for transportation purposes, since it doesn't really go anywhere, but I rode it anyway to collect the GPS trace.

Downtown San Jose

Posted by Icycle on 13 November 2009 in English.

Added a bunch of details near 2nd and San Fernando, including a few buildings, a couple of supermarkets, several parking lots and garages, and some bicycle parking.

Filling in all the downtown details (and keeping them somewhat up to date!) will be large job for mappers with local knowledge and experience, since this isn't something you can do with Yahoo maps.

New Brighton State Beach

Posted by Icycle on 12 October 2009 in English.

Earlier this summer, I camped at New Brighton State Beach, in Capitola, California. I captured GPS tracklogs for the entire trip to and from the campsite, as well as some of my travels on the internal roads within the campsite.

While taking a look at the OSM rendering for New Brighton State Beach, I noticed that the existing internal roads in the park were significantly different from what I remembered, so I cleaned the up a bit, using my GPS tracklogs as reference. Due to the heavy tree cover in the area, it is difficult or impossible to use the satellite images for reference.

I was able to get things a little closer to reality, but it would probably be a good idea for someone to map out this park a little more thoroughly, because I know there are still some inaccuracies and omissions in the existing data.

Hawaiʻi Island Names (and Midway Atoll)

Posted by Icycle on 6 October 2009 in English.

I recently returned from a trip to Maui and Big Island, in the US state of Hawaiʻi. While I was there, I collected a very large quantity of GPS tracklogs.

Unfortunately, I quickly discovered that the existing TIGER imports for Maui and Big Island used an incorrect datum, so I'll have to wait for the latest TIGER data to be reimported for these islands before I can do any significant work based on my data collection.

In the meantime, I noticed that none of the main islands, nor the small islets and atolls in the Northwest Hawaiian Islands had been labeled with island names, so I took the opportunity to add names to all the major and minor islands.

I also added a few additional details about the manmade features of Midway Atoll based on the satellite photos and the written descriptions from the Wikipedia article on Miday.

Madden POC

Posted by Icycle on 29 June 2009 in English.

On a bike ride I took this weekend, I rode over the Madden pedestrian overcrossing that traverses I-680 in east San Jose. There are tons of POCs in the South Bay, many of which are not yet in OSM, so I've been slowly adding them as I notice them in satellite imagery, or when I encounter them in person.

North Tahoe Area Bike Trails

Posted by Icycle on 25 June 2009 in English.

This past weekend, I was in the North Lake Tahoe area for a wedding weekend, and during weekend I had the opportunity to go on some bike rides on the extensive network of multiuse paths in the area, with my ever present GPS receiver. My recent updates include all or part of the Squaw Valley Bike Trail, the Truckee River Bike Trail, and the West Lake Bike Trail.

I'm particularly excited about these updates, because I was unable to find few or no maps of these trails any where else online.

Truckee River

Posted by Icycle on 28 December 2008 in English.

It's always exciting when I have the opportunity to add a major natural or manmade feature to the map. Today, when I was touching up Highway 89 between Truckee and Lake Tahoe, I noticed on the satellite image the river which runs next to the highway. This is the Truckee River. I traced the route of the river from its source at Lake Tahoe all the way to near downtown Truckee.

Once again, there's plenty of room for lots of additional work here, including extending the Truckee river to its outlet, as well as tagging as bridges all the small roads that cross the river.

Truckee, CA

Posted by Icycle on 27 December 2008 in English.

I'm visiting my family's cabin in Truckee, California, so I decided to use the opportunity to edit OSM in the area. So far I've done the following:

* Cleaned up a bunch of TIGER data, primarily Northwoods Blvd and some of the adjoining streets.
* Added some of the local bike routes, including all or parts of routes 1, 2, 3, 4, 7, and 8.
* Added a few notable shops and amenities, including fuel, groceries, and a local bike shop.

As always, the TIGER data is very rough and needs a lot of attention.

Cleanups in Milpitas

Posted by Icycle on 18 December 2008 in English.

After a friend of mine pointed out a bicycle trail he had recently mapped in Milpitas, I checked it out, and I noticed a few problems in the area that I decided to clean up:

* Connected up the trail to the adjacent street.
* Moved a few nearby streets with incorrect TIGER data.
* Added a couple of missing streams based on the satellite images
* Marked a few bridges over these streams.

This area doesn't look like its had much detailed attention yet. My cleanups were relatively limited in scope. Someone could probably spend an afternoon or two just finishing up the tasks I started here.

Pacific Coast Bike Route

Posted by Icycle on 9 December 2008 in English.

The Pacific Coast Bike Route is a very popular bicycle touring route that follows the Pacific Coast of the United States from approximately Vancouver, British Columbia to Tijuana, Mexico. Caltrans District 1 still maintains and publishes maps for the portion of the route from the Oregon border through Del Norte, Humboldt, and Mendocino County. After getting explicit permission from Caltrans District 1, I have added a portion of the Pacific Coast Bike Route as a regional cycle network route in OSM.

As far as I know, only Oregon and Caltrans District 1 still publish official maps of the Pacific Coast Bike Route. I am still seeking permission from Oregon to use their map to add the Oregon section to OSM. The very nice folks at Caltrans District 1 are currently checking to see if any of the other Caltrans districts still publish maps of the route.

Variations on the Pacific Coast Bike Route are also published by the Adventure Cycling Association and in the book Bicycling the Pacific Coast. Both of these routes diviate to some extent from the official route.

In additional the Pacific Coast is one of the corridors in the proposed official US National Bike Route Network that was recently approved by the AASHTO, so this route may eventually be upgraded from a regional route to a national route.
