OSM mapping on android

Posted by JasperWallace on 26 December 2011 in English.

Just some quick notes:

Vespucci is nice and good to use for mapping on the go, but it dosen't save GPS tracks and they will vanish if you stop tracking!

OpenGPSTracker does exactly what it says, so use it for making GPX files. It doesn't do pinch zoom, it's a bit slow, also the osm map source it uses dosn't render highway=path!

For using maps:

Both OSMAnd and Mapdroyd are good, I really need to sit down with them and do proper reviews.

I can recommend http://f-droid.org/ for getting floss apps for android.

Mapping Holmwood common

Posted by JasperWallace on 26 December 2011 in English. Last updated on 28 December 2011.

It's been a while since I've been back to Holmwood, and each time I've gone I've found another bit of path to map.

One thing that really stands out this time is how inconsistent the tagging is of ways, we have several different ways on the common:

1) muddy footpaths that aren't a right of way, but since it's on national trust land are public access

2) real muddy public footpaths (yellow arrow).

3) muddy bridleways (blue arrow).

4) bridleways with a new compacted (recycled road surface?) surface that are also usable for cycles, and probably wheel chairs (blue arrow).

5) asphalt or gravel private roads to access the houses and cottages around the common edges.

for 1 and 2 we have any of:

highway=footway, designation=public_footpath, foot=yes
highway=footway, designation=public_footpath
foot=yes, highway=path
highway=footway
highway=path

for 3 we have:

designation=public_bridleway, foot=yes, highway=bridleway

and for 4:

foot=yes, highway=track, horse=yes

and for 5:

highway=track
access=private,highway=track,surface=asphalt

From reading this: osm.wiki/UK_Countryside_mapping

I think we should be using:

1: highway=footway, foot=permissive, surface=*
2: highway=footway, designation=public_footpath
3: highway=bridleway, designation=public_bridleway
4: highway=track, designation=public_bridleway, foot=designated, bicycle=designated, horse=designated, wheelchair=maybe, surface=compacted
5: access=private,highway=track,surface=asphalt

But i'm pretty confused by the new scheme (should i be using the international style instead?), and esp. how to tag accurately and make sure that public footpath come out red and bridleways green on the maps!

About to do my first upload

Posted by JasperWallace on 9 November 2008 in English.

I'm trying to:

Change the footpath to the south of the allotments to be continus rather than being split by the road.

Add the allotments

Indicate the field to the SEof the allotments is a field.

Add the gate on the footpath to the NE of the allotments (where it joins the road to the sw of the school.

Add the School playing fields (I've put access=private on them since there not open to the general public, hope thats ok).

Hmm, merkaartor crashed on upload and lost my changes, great.

Edit - redid it and it worked this time.

Now to find out what tag i'm supposed to use for dog waste specific litter bins.
