The problem with having the English name in the "name" tag is that it is difficult to tell when someone removed the Thai name and added the English name instead, because they happen like the map better that way, or if it just doesn't have a Thai name yet. Unfortunately removal of the Thai names are not that uncommon.

Whenever possible, people do try to add the Thai name to both name and name:th.

Some hotels/chains will have a Thai name in addition to their primary English name, those cases their Thai name is added to name:th.

I just noticed that you re-added the name tag on "Wat Chiang Rai".

The name tag is for the name used by the locals, for a temple that would almost always be the Thai name in local script.

name:en can be used for the transcribed or translated names.

I have been trying to clean this up for a while, and I can see you are undoing my changes.

For hotels, restaurants and other brand stores, it is not uncommon that the name tag contains the English name, as that is the name used by locals as well.

Dear HHC, there is no reason to name unnamed roads.

What is the source of this data?, the quality seems quite low and it looks like something from an automated process. I see lot's of buildings drawn where no buildings exists.

Please don't replace the Thai names with English names.

Use name:en for English names.
The name tag is reserved for the local name which in Thailand is mostly Thai.

I just noticed that you are still tagging residential roads as highway=service, please tag them as highway=residential.

Changing from highway=residential to highway=track should not be much easier than just adding surface=unpaved.

Also tracks are not necessarily unpaved. So your change didn't really improve the data either, it just kind of made it worse.

Anyway, you are not bothering me at all. I just find it better to address problems as quickly as possible, so we don't end up with thousands of similar errors in the map data because nobody reported the problem.

Hi Balthus, I can see that you have started to change residential roads to tracks. These roads are clearly residential, and probably unpaved residential roads. Tracks are mostly used for agricultural purposes.

The name tags in OSM are used in the following way:
"name" contains the name used by the locals, this usually means Thai name in Thai script. This is different for hotels and other brands where their primary name could be in English (e.g. 7-Eleven).
"name:en" contains the English version of the name, this is usually the transcribed name, though a translated name could work too.
"name:th" is the Thai name in Thai script (no English characters should be used here).

I am telling you this because I have seen you change correctly tagged nodes/ways and replacing it with incorrectly tagged data.

When you mark roads as paved, you should only add the surface tag to the way, not each individual node.

Regarding the cleanup, I am not sure if there is an easy way in JOSM to remove the surface tag from the all nodes again.

Please don't delete the Thai names from the name field. The name field should be in Thai. The field name:en can be used for English or transcribed named.

In Thailand, the main name should be in Thai. Please don't change the names to the English names.

We still don't know too much.

We are currently seeing a high amount of changesets from different users with similar changeset comments, some contain edits that are problematic. We would love to get your input in our forum so we can learn more about these edits.
