To Holmsund and back with my bike

Posted by MMN-o on 24 April 2016 in English.

A couple of days ago, April 22nd, I went on a bicycle ride from Umeå to Holmsund and back, passing through the nature reserve Umeälvens Delta. The whole ride, without stops, was probably about 30km but I of course took the opportunity along the way to map some stuff.

First of all I noticed that my mobile phone, using OsmAnd~, routed me through a closed gate at the Alvik airport so I fixed that and added a node with barrier=gate linking the highway and the fence. All the other gates along that fence that I rode past were properly mapped though, so that made me happy.

Kartklappar på julen

Posted by MMN-o on 25 December 2015 in Swedish (Svenska).

Posted by MMN-o on 19 August 2015 in English.

Last week I went over Tavelsjöberget three times, tracing and looking for points of interests for hikers. As I don’t have a an ATV (nor a snowmobile during the winter) I didn’t bother checking those routes. The picnic sites and toilets are still, afaik, available all year around for such activities as well.

I went by bus to one side of the mountain, to Sand bus stop C which is next to Tavelsjön. Nearby there is a café, beach, minigolf course and such there which of course attracts some tourists, so I figured I could map some of it. When walking from there to the mountain path’s start, you pass an attraction (which is along Tavelsjön Runt, something I’ll probably build a relation for some day) called “Sikta Tavelsjöodjuret”. In English this translates to “Find the Tavelsjö monster” (see: local version of the Loch Ness monster). There’s a small information board next to it, while the attraction itself is a metal pipe aimed at Tavelsjön, which shows the location “where the monster is most often sighted”.

The walk I took was about 5km (not counting height differences) but as I didn’t stay in any of the cabins there I had to walk about the same length further to get to my sleeping place. This was the “shortest and quickest” route, but I mainly wanted to get things like picnic sites and such properly marked. There are some reference data (such as the municipality’s index numbers for the shelters etc.) that I still want to get - and of course I want to walk one of the longer paths to make sure they are correctly marked on the map as well.

The probably most popular and best equipped picnic site’s coordinates is linked to this post, it’s the “Tavelsjöberget” picnic site, relatively near the (small) mountain’s peak. It has a toilet called “Ändamålet” (where “ända” means “butt” in Swedish and “mål” would here be interpreted as “finish line”).

Long-standing cycleway rerouting

Posted by MMN-o on 1 August 2015 in English.

Along Umeälven there is a cycleway which was broken off some years ago due to constructions of new buildings. There’s also a waterway=stream there that has peaked my interest earlier due to a totally failed urban exploration adventure. The stream begins on the other side of Botniabanan and comes out towards Umeälven.

It was a long time ago this new way route was built and it really feels good to write it off from my checklist of “things I should probably do sometime”.

I20 disc golf course

Posted by MMN-o on 23 July 2015 in English.

Yesterday I was out mapping the disc golf course on I20 in Umeå, I’m learning relations and general mapping best practices.

I’m also starting to get a feel for Leaflet, Overpass and other libraries/APIs which will be good when visualising my edits.

Note: I don’t actually play disc golf myself.
