So for the past several years I have been downloading the GNS Country files (http://earth-info.nga.mil/gns/html/namefiles.htm). Some of the data is great. Most of the data is way off. All in all it is helpful. In the past OSM imported some of this data in countries that were lacking. This is good and bad for different reasons in different countries. So now comes the questions/ rant section of the post.

Recently I read someone’s copyright restrictions on their data. They said you ‘cannot copyright a fact or a location’ So it really threw me, because I am such a spaz about copyright, and not plagiarizing, or copyright infringement.

Can you copyright a latitude and longitude with a place name!?

I am looking for people who know about Russia, location data for Russia, and anything gis Russia. I am trying to compile geospatial data for Russia and am finding to be very difficult! OSM has good data in certain locations and not so good in others. Some of the OSM data lines up with GNS data which is good and bad. I have tried to reach out to numerous agencies across Russia on a local, regional, and Federal level; I know none of my questions will go anywhere!? I have looked here: osm.wiki/WikiProject_Russia and do not really see anything that can assist me. I have also tried http://gis-lab.info/ but they also can only provide limited help. I know Russian mappers are out there! Could someone who knows a fair amount of information about location information for Russia please message me and I will ask more specific questions. Any help is much appreciated!

Not really sure how many of you go to http://geocommons.com/ but there is a lot of data out there. Dave Linthicum's Library has world wide datasets for international boundary lines from the U.S. State Department. Check it out here: http://geocommons.com/users/DLinth/overlays
