Sidewalks by length

(highway=footway) and (footway=sidewalk)

Note that in some cases (combined footway and cycleway) highway=path + footway=sidewalk will be valid (though it is probably very rare)

Sidewalks by length

Thanks for running this! I suspected this effect, but it is nice to have tour opinion confirmed (yes, I am aware about confirmation bias).

It is nice to see completely opposite results, so multiple confounders are much less relevant.

My only comment is for legend: maybe “sidewalks mapped with sidewalk tag” and “sidewalks mapped as a separate way” would be better?

Roadside Rest Areas in Australia

Some small roadside stops directly adjacent to the roadway have been mapped using amenity=parking (with additional tags) rather than highway=rest_area. However, most roadside rest areas are tagged as highway=rest_area, as described in the international wiki highway=rest area.

Maybe mention that amenity=parking area is still to be tagged within highway=rest_area (or on the same object if parking is sole facility?)

highway=rest_area, amenity=parking, capacity:car=no, capacity:hgv=32

On one object? I would expect at least toilets, also within highway=rest_area area but not within amenity=parking

I need to know what imagery I can use in this application

Thanks, that was very interesting!

Sorry / Bad choice of words

Thanks for that entry!

The comment was very unfortunate but some reactions were very overblown.

Entering buildings REALLY quickly in JOSM, and how to make them ready for streetcomplete housenumber tagging

example of good enough vs unnecessary

I use SC quite heavily and with so inaccurate geometries it would be impossible to answer confidently, I would likely and answering “can’t say” -> “mapped building geometry mismatches actual geometry”.

I just logged in. How on EARTH did this get 12 comments? Who found this? I hadn’t advertised it on any forum or anything.

For me: OSM Weekly linked osm.org/user/coolmule0/diary/394563 that in turn linked this entry

Streetcomplete is an easy to use app for android

Nice to hear good things about SC :)

(and maybe for IOS soon)

See https://github.com/westnordost/StreetComplete/issues/1892 “iOS version” issue, it has “help wanted” tag. Summary is that it would take 4 months of work, noone is working on it right now. But SC is developed/refactored in way to ensure that it is getting easier rather than harder to make an iOS version.

Initial Mapper Experience

Thank you for writing this! Such feedback is extremely valuable.

I edited osm.wiki/Tag:building%3Dterrace for start in attempt to clarify that there are multiple correct and OK ways to map and none risk incorrectly mapping them.

Sustainable Travel Expenses Resolution – Request for Support

Note that in this proposal (as stated) paying far more money for car rental, long distance taxi or vastly more expensive train is considered as a “reasonable alternative”.

In case of funding travel expense it would be necessary to select vastly more expensive alternative if it exists and matches this requirements?

So in case where there is either flight costing 100 euro and long distance taxi for 20 000 euro (with bus/train being unavailable) it would be mandatory to pay for taxi.

And in case where there is option

(a) flight for 100 euro, flight takes 3 hours in total (including airport security theater) (b) train tickets for 500 euro, travel takes 9 hours with multiple changes

then it would be forbidden to select option a?

GitHub's backward blocking causes conflict aggravation

if you block somebody on GitHub, they won’t get (your) notifications:

That is the whole point of blocking people.

The State of OpenStreetMap in Africa

This visualization shows the total number of mapped buildings per year in each country from 2007 to 2020. Which also shows the history and journey of OpenStreetMap editing in Africa.

I am curious why people focus so strongly on buildings.

It is both quite decoupled from actual local mapping communities as may be relatively easily mapped from another continent. And it has relatively low importance if someone is actually using this data (yes, it is useful for some purposes).

MapRoulette Insider - Creating a Challenge

GeoJSON docs are a bit hidden in challenge creation progress.

For example

You can also reference feature properties from your GeoJSON with simple mustache tags: e.g. {{address}} would be replaced with the value of the address property, allowing for basic customization of instructions for each task. This field is required.

Viel Spaß noch

Yes, DWG should be used iff user needs to be blocked (due to ongoing damage, refusal to communicate etc).

Viel Spaß noch

“I can only speculate about the reasons because I rarely get answers to my questions.” (via Google translate).

Have you tried contacting DWG ( osm.wiki/Data_working_group ) ?

If you are unwilling to do this - can you link cases where there are ignored changeset comments and people continue to edit in this way?

Damaging data and ignoring communication attempts are valid reason for blocking from editing.

OSM Sandbox

And please - if you know that there is no sandbox then please stop deleting random objects or creating fake cities.

Do you have any contact with people in Facebook that would be able to fix missing attribution?

Currently FB is not attributing OSM properly in its products and I have no idea who can be (a) contacted (b) can fix that issue or order someone to fix this issue.

Note that access=delivery means that residents are not allowed to use this entrance, only delivery is allowed.

What kind of specific information you want to map?

Is access=no/private/permissive/yes sufficient to cover your needs?
