Upavon is small, but rather than a village, it is in fact a market town by charter. Henry III granted a charter in 1220 to Peter de Mauley to hold a Tuesday market, in 1226 a second charter for a Monday market, which was followed shortly after by a third charter, allowing two annual fairs. Upavon was, relative to mediæval times, a remote outpost, but also at the convergence of four major roads (from Devizes, Marlborough, Amesbury and Salisbury), hence its significance.
