For the topic of women, I recommend reading Invisible Women: it’s like the most important book of 2020. It highlights biases in everything, from economics and quotas to governance and tech.

Chris, are lit=* and street lamp really “routinely” recorded? I don’t see them as often as say road lanes or surfaces.

Yuri, we see that in indirect signs: mapped and unmapped attributes, comm and dev channels demographic, governance. Even welcome screens and tutorials have an unconsious bias.

Thanks Heather and Geochicas for this initiative! With the multiple failures of diversity and inclusion working groups, this actually might work. The comments above confirm we need to do this. I did a similar thing for the Russian community, and it feels better. And I got similar responses in the process: while these are awful, they will end eventually. I’d be glad to help with whatever I can. Will share this in my channels.

First, I love the UI you did for these features — both for uploading photos and for geometry editing.

It saddens me a little that this development seems to be done without actual in-the-field testing. What’s been done is 1) duplicating Mapillary, 2) duplicating Go Map / Vespucci. All three of these work offline. Why not focus on things these apps do not do?

In the first post, you wrote: “Observe makes field surveying and verification easy for mappers”. This is not easy. You could focus on perfecting editing point features — which of all OSM-based apps only Maps.Me does tolerably. Collecting point features (shops, benches, trees, potholes, addresses) it still an unsolved problem in OSM field mapping.

Drawing lines on screen in a manner of vector editing is tedious. You would basically just stand at a corner for half an hour trying to move lines on your small screen. What could have been done is free-drawing on top of imagery: few strokes for service roads — and you continue your surveying. And these could be shared via a backend to JOSM: drawing lines using these hand-drawn hints would be much faster and simpler.

There are two sandboxes in OSM: one at the development server, which is almost empty, another in the iD editor: when you first open it, there is a thorough tutorial editing an imaginary town. You can access it later by opening the editor, clicking the question mark button at the right, and then clicking the “Start the Tutorial” button.

Also, as suggested on the Sandbox wiki page, you can do whatever in JOSM, provided you don’t upload your changes to the server.

Я обычно рисовал отдельные контуры с отступами от дорог. Но как временное решение, можно рисовать отдельный контур чуть меньше, но на всю территорию НП, чтобы включал только населённые территории. Когда мне было совсем лениво, я делал два мультиполигона на одном контуре, но это совсем редко.

Кажется, здесь нет противоречий, есть только уровни детальности. Дорога через полигон леса — это нормальное приближение, когда делаешь базовое покрытие. Дорога, вокруг которой лес расступается в отдельные полигоны — это картирование уже средней детальности. Наконец, после этого уже можно по-микромапить: нарисовать ручьи в трубах под дорогой, знаки, обозначить ширину и покрытие. У OSM нет единого эталонного уровня детализации, поэтому все три способа равнозначно правильны.

Но прикреплять болото или лес к дороге неправильно, потому что это тот же уровень детализации, как если не прикреплять, а вести чуть в стороне. Внутри одного уровня детализации есть соответствующие ему правила. Отдельные правила для микромаппинга, отдельные для среднего уровня, отдельные для базового покрытия.

Ну и вешать landuse=residential на контур — это моветон, который порицался тоже ещё до моего прихода в проект, и мнение не изменилось. Вот только последние обсуждения на форуме: раз, два, три.

Даже перепроверил год заметки: думал, это отголосок 2014. Название на точке и на полигоне — супер-длинная проблема OSM, которую обсужали ещё до того, как я пришёл в проект. Для решения мы придумывали тег place_name, который потом отменили. В репе картостиля минимум пять обсуждений, некоторые с пул-реквестами. Закрытыми, потому что для мейнтейнеров это не проблема.
