First test

於 2012年五月29日 由 adanoEnglish發表。

In “View” mode, zoomed in to part of Caboolture.

Selected “Edit”. Added the pool icon in the appropriate spot, then clicked “Save”. When prompted for a comment, said I had added the pool.

Then selected Glendale Street and set the label on it. Clicked save again. This time, not prompted for a comment, so I figured it was incorporated with the pool icon edit that I had just done.

Went back to “View” mode to have a look. Glendale St labelled, but no pool icon. Went to “History” and saw my edit there and it was labelled as “still editing”. When back to edit mode, found the icon there all right, so also added the name “Caboolture swimming pool”, in case that was relevant. Clicked “Save” and I was prompted this time for a comment; I said I’d added the pool and labelled Glendale St, figuring this was still part of the same editing session.

Back in “View” mode, still no pool. In “History” mode, I now have two separate edits listed, both saying that I’ve added the pool, and both saying “still editing”. Something’s not right!

This is normal. Potlatch isn’t very clear about opening and closing changesets. Potlatch will automatically open a new changeset when you click save, any times you click save after this will add the new changes to the same changeset. Then if you leave the editor the changeset will not be closed, it will eventually time out and by closed by the server. Opening the editor again will put it in a clean state so it will create a new changeset as you saw.

If you want to manually close a changeset then you can use the “c” shortcut in Potlatch.

The map display sometimes takes a while to update, also your browser will normally cache the tiles. So to see your changes you should wait a few minutes and then refresh the page using F5 or possibly Shift-F5. Sometimes if the server is busy then it can take longer to update the tiles, and tiles which are zoomed out update less frequently.

FWIW Potlatch can’t really be any clearer about closing the changeset - if you choose to close the editing window, Potlatch has no way of knowing about it.

Welcome to OSM and the complexity that is mapping and rendering maps.

The Standard view on the View tab does not try to display every type of object that the OSM database holds. It would be too cluttered. The Standard view is just one map, an example of what is possible if you like. There are many other renders of OSM data that show different things and your edit will appear on some of them.

The editor Potlatch (the one that starts by default when you click Edit) has many icons for things and some do not get rendered on the Standard view - the data is useful but the not on every render of the map. If I download the OSM data for your area into my Garmin Sat-nav your pool would probably appear as a point of interest (POI).

Potlach2 always keeps the changeset open until you close it manually (press key c) or a timeout happens. That’s normal. After closing the potloach page and reopening it a new changeset is started. The older changesets will be in “still editing” mode for a few minutes but the changes are already in the database ready to be rendered.

Regarding the swimming pool: Not every item you can enter into the database will be rendered on the standard map. If the swimming pool really is a public open air path you can draw a line around the area and e.g. label it with leisure=water_park (maybe other tagging suits better). Mapping the outline of the pool with leisure=swimming_pool will be rendered on the standard map.

Thanks for the comments! I hadn’t even got to reading about the “diary” yet (just dived in, trying things, rather than reading stuff), but seeing it, I figured it was a convenient place to keep notes for myself about what I do and learn along the way. Little did I know I’d get helpful feedback!

As for how to do the pool correctly (thanks for the details, Zartbitter), I’ll try it out sometime, but on this occasion it appears another has fixed my muddle for me (thank you, zors1843).

Thanks again for smoothing out my learning curve. I must say, my first impression of Potlatch is quite good, despite my problems which are more me than it.
