1. 🤝 Last Saturday, we had our first volunteers meetup! About 14 people joined the call and we focused our session in getting to know each, and providing clear guidance and space for questions regarding the sub-committee’s goals, volunteer roles, and what to expect

2. ✈ Today, co-leads meet to get to know each other and to set expectations

• Co-leads expressed their enthusiasm to lead teams and identified support needed (e.g. clarity on role, resources, tasks to undertake, time commitment etc)
• Co-leads are: Pilot (be the leaders), Support (their co-leads and team members), and Engage (facilitate within their team)

I was thinking of sharing my experience and reflection for my second year as an OSMF board member, like I did in my first year, then thought, it would be better and greater to write it with my co-board members.

Together with my 2024 fellow board members, Craig, Dani, Mateusz, Roland and Sarah, we are grateful to share our Collective Board Report for the 2024 Year of the OSMF.

In this collective report, we share and document what happened in 2024, celebrate achievements, be transparent about our challenges, and recommend improvements to progress OSMF mission.

I’d like to also mention the collaborative process and inclusion of diverse perspective that we put in our work together as a Board and documented in this written report.

I love this excerpt from the Collective Power Playbook:

“By working together, we can achieve more and benefit more than alone. Collective power means shared ownership of outcomes, lessening the likelihood of failure and benefit for many rather than the few.”

Personal reflection

When I decided to run for OSMF Board in 2022, my main agenda were to improve representation and ensure that community agenda is at the table. Looking back, I put four focus areas in my manifesto, and shared updates for and shifting prioritization after my first year as board member.

This year, as part of the Board, I focused on the OSMF Membership Campaign, being the Board liaison to the Membership WG, and revising State of the Map (SotM) pages.

Along the road, I went through a major life change and so I needed to deprioritize and shift focus again. I decided not to re-run in the Board, and continue to contribute to the SotM and LCCWG.

My hope for the OSMF is continue to push for gender and geographic representation and inclusive participation in leadership spaces as well as increase transparency and commitment to open collaboration among its board, members and the community.

Personal note and acknowledgement

The Open Mapping Women Awards 2024 was inspired by the 𝗦𝘁𝗮𝘁𝗲 𝗼𝗳 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗠𝗮𝗽 𝗔𝘀𝗶𝗮 𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟯 𝗖𝗼𝗺𝗺𝘂𝗻𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗔𝘄𝗮𝗿𝗱𝘀 where we recognized community champions across Asia. Of’course, this would not also be possible without the brains and heart of the wonder HOT Community Working Group members, and the amazing women in our open mapping community.

I would also want to thank my DEI Champion, friend and beb, Mikko Tamura, for instilling in me that why don’t we recognize every nominations? There may be some unsung heroines or leaders we don’t know globally or have just one nomination, but their impact goes beyond that.

I hope we can continue celebrating and recognizing women in our community!

(Note: Took me 8 months to write something about this. But hey, do you know that International Women’s Day (IWD) is celebrate every March 8? And yes, just want to make that connection with 8 month delayed posting lol. Sorry for the very delayed update! 🥹)

Key highlights: We are happy to share the accomplishments of the 2024 OSMF Membership Campaign: 1) ~ 392 sign up’s from March, most of them were through the Active Contributor Membership Program; 2) there are now members in 16 new countries!; 3) Four (4) countries made 15+ new members: Libya, Niger, Nigeria and Colombia; and 4) one of our team leads, Priscovia, became part of the Membership Working Group (MWG).

In our effort to grow and diversify OSMF memberships, early this year, we ran a 3-month long OSMF Membership Campaign with volunteers from all over the world.

I thought that the new year is the best time to encourage contributors to become OSMF members by spreading awareness about OSMF membership and the Active Contributor Program. The OSMF Membership Campaign Drive idea came up when a community member from OSM Africa asked about the membership make up.

With my State of the Map Working Group - communications hat 👒 , one thing that really put a smile on my face is checking the stats of scholarships given! 😍

Quick stats re scholars from the OSMF SotM WG & Humanitarian OpenStreetMap Team #HOTOpenSummit Travel Grant Programs:

• 💻 10 online scholars
• ✈ 50 in-person scholars
• 🌍 🌎 🌏 from 27 countries
• 💛 💜 24 women : 36 men
• 1️⃣ 80% attended their first #StateoftheMap conference!
• plus 29 🎟 were given for free!

I cannot express enough how amazing it feels to see this stats. As someone who got exposed more to OpenStreetMap community after attending her first global SotM conference six years ago (my diary here), this gave me much hope and encouragement that we’re building an inclusive map and community 🗺 🤝

In 2 March 2024, various OSM contributors and community members/leaders gathered together for the Local Chapters and Communities Congress! It was my pleasure to share a short update about HOT where I work as an Online Community Engagement Lead.

Just a point to make that I shared about the HOT and its community, and not the HOT as an org. HOT Annual reports are available here.

How to get involved in HOT?

There are three general ways to get involved with HOT:

1. mapping in your own time,
2. participate in a HOT Working Group/s, and
3. contribute to tech.

So how do we engage with the community / contributors at HOT?

Since lots of different community members and leaders were there in the Congress, I took the opportunity to share and highlight how we foster a collaborative and inclusive space in HOT and channels

my prolonged OSM diary about my experienced as an OSMF board member. Apologies for the delay!

Some background and tips to prepare as a board member

I joined the OSMF Board in Dec 2022 and this is my first time to hold a board member position! You can check my manifesto and answers to board election questions. I’d like to go back to this to check my progress and what needs to improve.

Since it is a new role, it really is intimidating at first! Even though I have talked with other open community and geo board members, it is different once you are in!

Some of the best tips I got are:

• Talk with leaders and people you know who have board member experience, learn from them and would be good if they can support / mentor you :)
• There is a free board member essentials available online (e.g. this Nonprofit Board Essentials from disasterready.org) so better try it and have an assessment of you board member potentials (don’t get too pressured, you will learn as you go!)
• Be a board member while you still have the time and capacity :) I am a full time mother and working woman so it was a hard decision to make; but then I realize, if I want to be a board member, I’ll better do it now since I have the capacity and interest! :)
• Two years seems like a long time but not really! You will have ideals and goals so better make that best out of it!
• Also remember, change takes time. Don’t overfrustrate yourself ;)

What happened in 2023, then?

Last year came by so fast. I am not so proud of what I have accomplished as a board as I have had some health challenges. It was a learning experience (the success and failures) for me!

OSM PH community members’ aspirations

For introduction and icebreaker, our wonderful host (Jikka) asked us to introduce ourselves and share our aspirations for the 2024. Since some participants are new/beginner to OSM, aspirations can be personal and/or OSM-related.

From learning how to swim, graduating this year (lots of them are students from UPRI), healthier lifestyle (more sleep, eating on time and exercise) to growing the community and being more involved in OSM, we are really aspiring this year! Hope to go back to this and see by end of the year!

User-Friendly Website Design with Brazil Singh

Brazil is currently the President of Youthmappers Chapter at Eastern University of Bangladesh. He shared his expertise and experience in creating user-friendly website design using WordPress. He presented theoretical and step-by-step guide on how to create a website. This webinar was inspired by his passion to support Youthmappers chapters to design their own website.

Why become a CommunityWG Chairperson?

You will have the opportunity to connect, collaborate with and facilitate a diverse and talented set of people from the humanitarian open mapping community! You get to also sharpen you communication, networking and facilitation skills that can support your professional development!

What is the role?

Essentially, the role of CommunityWG chairperson is in two folds:

*Engagement

• Engage with communityWG members and encouraging/reminding them to participate and attend the meetings and events
• Ensure that communitywg meetings and channels (loomio, slack, matrix, mailing) remain an inclusive and healthy environment for everyone, following the HOT Code of Conduct

*Administrative

• Ensure that meeting notes and documentations are organized and readable
• Ensure that community shoutouts and agenda are filled and open for everyone to add

Who are we looking for?

• Required: Active member of HOT Community Working Group and/or a HOT voting member and must have participated in the meeting at least twice and/or participated in community channels (slack, loomio, matrix, mailing list) *A deep passion and commitment to humanitarian open mapping / OpenStreetMap/ open data/ humanitarian or development work / community development *Working fluency in English; non-native English speaker is very welcome!
