@TylerOSM hi Tyler, it differs per community. We want them to identify that instead of us identifying it since the local collaborators have the knowledge of what resource would be most beneficial/have highest value for their communities :)

To give you a background, here are the first resource/s that the communities have identified and why these resources (based on community calls), as well as translation status.

  1. Background: Vietnamese collaborators find it most beneficial to translate OSM tagging guidelines to support them in making contributions in the map
  2. Status: a.) first pass of translation done, thanks to Grab Vietnam Map Operation Team b.) awaiting finalization/second pass of translation from Tony & Huy
  1. Background: Madagascar collaborators find HOT documentation/opportunities to translate in French so they can actively participate to HOT activities (e.g. prepare proposals, etc)
  2. Status: a.) first pass of translation done via deepL machine translator b.) review made via OSM Wiki
  1. Background: During the initial call with Mozambique collaborators, they wanted to know first what humanitarian open mapping resources are available. I gave them the list (website (including tools eg Tasking Manager, learnOSM), osm wiki pages, youtube videos, social media, etc). We suggested to do the Grants page first so they can participate in the call and they agreed. In the following days, they have identified 2 training videos (beginner iD and JOSM editing), 1 community webinar video (on starting local community), and the Activation Protocol + Activation Training Center.
  2. Status a.) first pass of translation done via deepL machine translator b.) done/ review made via OSM Wiki

We will make future write ups/blogs/resports to share the progress of the Project. Thank you!

Thank you for your service, Miriam! I appreciate you bringing up the challenges first before the achievements part. I am inspired by your bravery to share these challenges.

Launching: [Language] Localization as an Inclusion and Participatory Enabler

@RebeccaF there are 3 assumptions (that I did not include in the diary but is in the project document):

Assumption 1: Localization will encourage and enable access and usage of our resources (tools, documentation, text and video manuals) and participation in our activities (e.g. services we offer such as training, open dialogues, etc).

Assumption 2: Localization will reduce the stigma (lack of English/European language fluency perceived as lack of intelligence or competence) and fear/lack of confidence that local communities feel when we communicate and engage with them.

Assumption 3: Localization will yield a better relationship with the priority communities/ countries we want to support.

Candidate Statement to the HOT Board

“In order to make HOT more inclusive and diverse, the participation of members of the African and Francophone community at the executive level is important. This will allow for the unique and specific aspects of the realities within these communities to be taken into account.”

@qeef something we can do next year (if SotM 2022 will still be online)! It might require some kind of programming though, esp for livestreams where you can have that option. Right now, we are trying to embed the audio translation to the talks/videos - also the main reason for the delay, @InsertUser, but will be up soon, please bear with us! :)

@Mateusz Konieczny I agree with you! It really takes a lot of time to pre-record a video. But I think it totally pays off! Pre-recorded videos help prevent tech difficulties (e.g. speaker’s mic/screen sharing is not working,etc), allows lite video mode (live usually takes a lot of bandwidth) and provides better time management compared to a live presentation :)

Revitalize Diversity and Inclusion in OSMF

Hi Mikel, just saw this randomly in twitter (but obviously I was searching about diversity threads hehe). What I would suggest is like a monthly or quarterly diversity call with everyone in the community. This is an idea I got from Open Source Diversity Initiative where they conduct monthly diversity calls, and been attending to learn from them.

I would also suggest that it will be good to have someone from the board attending, but this is not something that only one OSMF board member should attend, can be a rotational too (and at alternating timezones). This may help build osmf. disc and osm community accountability on the topic.

Not sure if BBB has the same functionality, but Jitsi has a log of how much time each person speaks, so it will help track of who have not been heard yet. I recognize not everyone is comfortable to speak via voice (insert = language barrier) so we can also explore jamboards or menti which in an interactive written communication.

Thanks for this information. 13:00 UTC has worked for us in the Philippines. I am not just proposing a specific time only. I am proposing that the board would look at different alternatives to be more accessible to everyone. For example, they can have alternating meeting times (15:00 UTC this month, next month can be 10:00 UTC so those who were not able to attend this month may have the chance to attend next month.) Accessible not only the timing, but also the platform being used.

Hi Allan,

would the board consider scheduling the meeting in an accessible time? As a global project with people from different timezone, we should find ways “how” to be more accessible so members could get involved (and be included). The timing of the latest board meeting as well as the upcoming AGM is not very friendly in the Asia-Pacific timezone. Hoping the board would consider.
