Mapping small / lesser known businesses in Slums of Mumbai | I don’t like a tagging scheme with only phone and description tags. I would try to fit them into a scheme with a shop or craft tag. Maybe even man_made=works, product=xxx Another solution is making a umap (http://umap.openstreetmap.fr) and then you have to freedom of mapping the businesses as you want. |

Idea of issue tracker for tagging scheme | Does Github support “multiple threads” ? What I mean is it possible to make a reply appear immediately under the original comment, instead of at the bottom under all comments ? For the type of discussion you want to do, I think this is a requirement. When I look at some of the discussion about carto-css, it find it difficult to see who is replying to who when a lot of people are commenting at the same time. |

Idea of issue tracker for tagging scheme | @ BuskManK, you wrote “I’m insisting, that both forums and mailing lists used for that purpose are making a dead end” Do you mean that you think that forums and mailing lists should not be used ? Or do you mean that you want that they are no longer used ? When it is a good tool for the goal, people will start using it. Otherwise they will keep using their preferred communication channel. I have seen too many people logging bugs for any of the tools related to OSM on fora or mailing lists that have nothing to do with the topic or where the developers do not read about the problems. Since tagging issues can be solved in the local community, discussions will continue to take place there. |

How to actually invent tags | Just a thought: Do we really need more structure in our tagging system ? As you indicated in your reply above some people have already problems to determine whether a swimming pool is a leisure or an amenity. Or they do not agree with the majority. What if we could just say “this thing is a swimming pool” by adding a tag (a real tag, not a key-value pair as we currently do) “swimming_pool” to an object. Let the data consumer decide whether it is an amenity, a leisure or a thing for tourists. Another question Why do we need to define aquatic centre by a bunch of key-value pairs ? Why can’t we just label it as “aquatics centre” ? If you, as a data consumer want to put it in some category, feel free to do so. Why do I, as a mapper, already decide in which category it belongs ? or try to use a bunch of key-value pair to express what I can simply express with 2 words ? Some people would like to see restaurant categorized as “shop”. Others not. Simply labeling it as “restaurant” solves this. This would also allow to tag a “thing” as butcher and bakery. I’ll admit that for word with two meanings or adjectives such as “primary” of “civic”, this does not work. It will also not work for names, refs, addresses, etc. But for the top level thing, it might help. Structured tagging is fine for some people, not for others. Too much structure makes things complex. See dentist. “dentist” is very easy, “amenity=dentist” is a less easy (I have to decide between office, amenity, …) , and dentist tagging according to HealthCare 2.0 is complex. If a word (or group of words) exists in a dictionary we should be able to use it as a tag. The documentation can then add the possible categories (amenity, leisure, …) to which the item belongs. Software can add those categories when needed. So Aquatics Centre would be a valid tag. I haven’t thought about this for a very long time. There will probably be issues with this way of tagging as well. |

Idea of issue tracker for tagging scheme | Right now, some people use the tagging mailing list for this. Of course, this does not really allow tracking of the issue. OTOH, not everybody is familiar with the concept of “bug” tracking. Github is a software developer solution, I wonder whether this platform is attractive for non-developers. Adding a issue tracking system for tagging problems seems a good idea. But, as usual, there will still be other places (local mailing lists, fora) that will be used for the same purpose. And the outcome (solution) for a tagging problem might be different in different places. |

How to actually invent tags | Did you read all mails on the tagging mailing list that were written before leisure=aquatics_centre was proposed ? [1] And the mails after that [2] ? There was quite some research before the proposal was written. 10 years | Hats off to you Maning. Amazing work |

Learning things.... | BTW, if you are looking for help, http://help.openstreetmap.org is a better place to get it |
|
Learning things.... | I assume you filled in your OpenStreetMap username and password under “basic authentication” in the settings window, not your google account. |
|
Setting up JOSM | Nice job, BTW, OAuth is available in JOSM tested 9329. I just enabled it after seeing your videos :-) |
|
ET do Independence Day | Sorry for the English: I wonder why you need the one-way “road” on the top ? |
|
Issue with road in cycle view | Is it possible that the problem has been fixed in the meantime ? Perhaps the rendering on the cycle view is still using old data. |
|
Val d'Or Residential Roads | I fear there is not a lot you can do. The imagery is most likely provided by Bing. It all depends when they add or update imagery. You might try to get in contact with the local community (e.g. via https://twitter.com/OsmMaroc) to see whether they have a solution for your problem. For some countries other imagery is available, but not always via the iD editor. |

Re-tagging picnic sites with leisure=picnic_site and amenity=picnic_site to tourism=picnic_site | Please note that is considered a mechanical edit (you do not visit all those places in person). Hence you have to follow the mechanical edit procedure: osm.wiki/Automated_Edits_code_of_conduct o.a. you will have to consult the local communities to see whether they agree with the proposed change. Not everybody agrees with the content of the wiki. A blog post such as this is not considered the correct way to connect to the local communities I’m pretty sure that e.g. the British community will oppose to any edit of this kind (at least a few vocal persons in that community) You will also need a page such as osm.wiki/Automated_edits/Math1985/Musical_instrument, a dedicated account, etc. This comment is not to prevent you from doing it, just informing you about the possible “dangers” along the way. |

Data and community in the Belgian regions | @philippec, I still see Mapillary as an aid to mapping, one of the many possible, not a goal on itself. It’s not because there are a lot of pictures found for a particular area, that the OpenStreetMap data are complete or up-to-date. I rather see people mapping stuff than taking pictures :-) Remember that Mapillary is not OpenStreetMap. Furthermore I almost stopped contributing to Mapillary because there is not a lot of benefit for me. |

Unterwegs auf Neuen Wegen | Nice pictures, number 2 is my favorite |

A Mapper in the Spotlight: Dave Swarthout (USA/Thailand) | Sorry to hear that Warin61. Didn’t know that surveying for OSM was dangerous. |

A Mapper in the Spotlight: Dave Swarthout (USA/Thailand) | My pleasure primej, I learned already a few things about Thailand thanks to Dave |

Japan road alignment - Taking it further | Of course with the “m” key it depends on the order in which you select the nodes, which road keeps its layout |
|
Japan road alignment - Taking it further | Great work and nice write-up of the different JOSM actions that can be used. I prefer the “n” key over “m” or “j” to attach a node to another way, as it keeps the layout of the way. |
