Geely calls for relaxation of China mapping laws

As I wrote in the Wiki, all cases of prosecution were in areas with civil ‘unrest’ or near military objects. Plenty of mappers based in China have contributed lots of data and several of them don’t feel afraid to list their name, contact details or affiliation, so it seems that they don’t worry about prosecution.

However, relaxation of the law could mean that the Chinese government or companies based in China could finally distribute data under licence that allow usage or importing to OSM. For example the Chinese government runs a service that provides full coverage of all of China in approximately 5 m or better resolution, but we are not allowed to use this. Local governments also distribute lots of useful information, such as public bicycle station locations or development plans.

Copernicus Sentinel's TCI

Using ESA’s software and uploading the exported geotiff to Mapbox studio, it’s a fairly easy process now. Open zip, generate image, adjust colours, export, upload and use. The most annoying part is finding the right tile (location, cloud coverage and tile coverage).

Are you joking ??

[demo] Emojis in overpass turbo!! 😍😈😃

Thanks! Now I can start correcting mixed language names in China (of which there are many…)

Ghost roundabout

Looks similar to this: https://www.google.nl/maps/@52.9391636,6.1317876,3a,75y,212h,58.87t/data=!3m6!1e1!3m4!1sAB-lfJSwOliOZZOD0Y3KrA!2e0!7i13312!8i6656!6m1!1e1?hl=en

Just for decoration. Actually it’s quite a subtle way to mark crossings to alert drivers that traffic from the right has right of way.

Editing with Overpass and Level0

Just an additional tip in case you’re using this method for more complicated things: you can download an OSM file of your changes in Level0, then open this in JOSM to have a more visual validation check.

Fixing Jakarta's boundaries (Part I)

Oh that’s fine then! I’m still wondering if the admin_level is right. Of course how it looks on the standard layer is not that important, but having a 50m by 100m area tagged at the same level as a village seems flawed. Anyway, if I’m wrong here, it would be good if you or another mapper in Indonesia could update the wiki pages on this.

Fixing Jakarta's boundaries (Part I)

According to this Wiki page, in Indonesia, boundary level 8 is for villages, and 9 for communities. Which one is right?

And you haven’t mentioned the exact source of this data. Did you use this as a source? https://www.petajakarta.org/banjir/en/data/v2/ In that case I should point out that Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 is not suitable for OSM use. (because OSM data cannot comply with showing the attribution to end users)

Time to cleanup the wikipedia:xx tags?

In case there is more than one “wikipedia:lang” tag, you will lose data when removing all but one, unless there is also a “wikidata” entry linked.

Also, from the graph, it seems like the “wikipedia:de” tag was already converted at some point in 2015.

Scaling multilingual name tags with Wikidata

Good initiative! I will add wikidata links manually when I come across a place that lacks them.

Bus Stops in Shanghai Municipality

You could try a match between bus stop names and locations already on OSM to get an estimate of their location, and maybe some stops are already on the map, but not named correctly.

@gileri Some people also add bus stops only as amenity=bus_station

Tagged and Untagged Nodes

I haven’t bothered to learn overpass syntax yet, but I found these two scripts;

  1. find all nodes without tags: http://overpass-turbo.eu/s/js4
  2. find all nodes not part of a way http://overpass-turbo.eu/s/js5

Combining these should give all nodes without tags and not part of a way…

Please add population numbers to places

嗯,我刚才加的一些城市的人口(徐州,杭州,青岛),一个星期后来应该是可见。

Please add population numbers to places

我看到也有“china_class”。可是这个文章关于city(应该是prefecture level?)。已经是很难。。。

还有一个问题:区点应该放到区的地理中心,或者在区人口中心?

A Rant: The Way Beyond Craftmapping That Nobody Is Talking About

While better in some areas, OSM isn’t on par, for the full range of uses, with maps from Google/Apple/etc.

Is that true though? I find other maps to lack in certain areas just as much. Google Maps is in China for example, where Baidu Maps and Tencent Maps have way more detail. For walking and cycling directions in Europe OSM is noticeable better than runner-up Google, with a lot more detail and a very up-to-date road network. Then you have the commercial aspect of other maps, it’s not clear based on which algorithm Google shows a certain shop at a higher zoom level, or they might adjust routing slightly to lead visitors through a shopping centre to boost sales.

And wasn’t the (original) idea behind OSM to just host map data? In theory, if there were contributors everywhere, we wouldn’t need an open source StreetView. For me at least, if I use StreetView (save for landmarks), it’s because the map is lacking and I need to get some information from the ‘raw data’.

I see a lot of opportunity for OSM with self-driving vehicles, when map data truly will become a massive business. When Google raised the fees for using their embedded maps, you saw the rise in use of Mapbox and other OSM sourced data. Big business can often kill open source projects, though of course there’s a risk in this as well.

Tell me about your username

I used to have my real name as a user name, but when I started mapping in China, I became more careful. I’d rather not risk getting a visa denied for I mapped a military area on OSM.

A new tag

Usually most things that do are not relevant for the renderer are added in either ‘note=’ or ‘fixme=’. Personally I don’t see why that wouldn’t work for this. e.g. ‘note=approximation’
