489887 | I know that there is a name dispute, but for goodness's sake, the city's official name is Londonderry. As a student of Northern Irish culture and politics, I was confused for far too long about this because some respectable writers call it Derry, and these maps say Londonderry/Derry. Again, I understand that there is a name dispute, but can you just label the city as its true name in order to prevent confusion? If people want to change the official name to Derry, then that is an entirely different matter. I am not saying this from a sectarian perspective. A good student of Northern Irish culture inevitably must choose a side, but I was confused about this before I even knew what the sides were. It's just confusing. Please change it, for the sake of future students, and for the sake of accuracy. If the official name changes to Derry, then change the name on the map to Derry. For instance, I can say Derry City and Strabane District. I do not say Londonderry City and Strabane District, and I do not say Londonderry/Derry City and Strabane District. Saying Londonderry/Derry is kind of like saying Northern Ireland/The Six Counties. |
