Wellingborough

Posted by grebble on 18 June 2009 in English.

I was in Wellingborough the other day and took a drive around to get some of the roads mapped. I've now got the main road that runs north/south through the town showing properly with its proper classification, I've completed the course of the A510 together with its junction of the A509 in the north, and I've got Queensway and Kingsway mapped properly, which were originally put in there with little more than guess work. Doddington Road is also now complete, and connected to its junction with Turnells Mill Lane.

It looks as though there is another user in the area doing his bit too, so hopefully before too long we'll get this hole filled in.

Really enjoying doing my bit for mapping this part of England that isn't particularly well covered by OSM. I was in Kettering yesterday so took the opportunity to trawl the shopping streets in the town centre. I'm slowly getting the missing rural minor roads mapped, and taking short detours on my way home from work to get Thrapston done.

I work in Peterborough and that area is quite well covered, but there still is the odd footpath near my office that I can do during the lunch hour. I noticed also that the suburbs have been tagged as 'townships' - not a valid tag as far as I can see, which is why they weren't being rendered.

Wellingborough desperately needs looking at, at the very least the major roads into the town need travelling and classifying, which I will do when I am in the area.

Definitely should have found this earlier and got involved! :-)

Mapped my home village

Posted by grebble on 7 June 2009 in English.

Went out for an hour this afternoon, walking the streets of my home village. Some streets I have never been down even after 6 years of living here! I've got most of the streets and footpaths done; still need to do the footpath round the local lake and put a few more POIs in. After that I'll be ready to move on to the next village, and then I'll start tackling the nearby towns.

East Northamptonshire

Posted by grebble on 5 June 2009 in English.

Despite the fact that I've had an extreme interest in maps since I was very small, I have only just discovered Openstreetmap. What a fantastic concept, I thought, and realising I could add to it myself with my GPS receiver, I thought it was right up my street (pun intended).

I live in rural East Northamptonshire, an area dotted with small villages and market towns. These are very poorly mapped on Openstreetmap at present, with many minor roads missing and entire villages not even marked, not to mention the myriad of country footpaths that cover the area, so I'm going to take this opportunity to get the area covered. I'll start with my home village and move onto the surrounding small towns. I hopefully should be able to improve the coverage in Kettering and Wellingborough, which at the moment is also quite sparse.
