Waze isn't the only crowdsourced mapping project - OpenStreetMap is also trying to map the world using GPS-equipped volunteers tramping about the place recording details. Waze is the only one who offers virtual rewards to those who take the time to visit badly-mapped places, however. OpenStreetMap hold parties there instead.

A New Way to Use GPS

You probably know about GPS devices—maybe you even let one guide you to new destinations. But you can also use many GPS devices to gather data for Wiki maps at OpenStreetMap.org. Have students travel around their home area, gathering map data. Help them upload their data to the Web site.

AOL sees revenues in local: Its CEO, Tim Armstrong, announced yesterday in New York that it plans to digitize entire towns with the help of Patch, the hyperlocal network it bought last year. Armstrong clearly sees a hole in the market here and plans to cover every aspect of community life from school boards to restaurants and shops. "We're hiring reporters," Armstrong said according to the business journal Portfolio.com. "Can you imagine that?"

Patch just switched to OpenStreetMap and appears to be busy with building its own map infrastructure, including designing, rendering and hosting its own tiles, according to zdnet. But that is not all. "Patch will go into stores, photograph everything and even tell consumers how many parking spaces there are," Armstrong said. "Even though it will have only 30 local communities outside New York City initially, it will scale substantially."

CloudMade is gearing up to release a set of tools that will enable people to quickly and easily contribute to the OpenStreetMap project.
At the same time the company is looking to create a developer model that will enable developers to use OpenStreetMap data and databases in their websites and iPhone applications.

"There are really two sides to this, there's a community facing side called Mapzen and a developer platform," said Nick Black, Founder of CloudMade.

Some people think map data is so valuable that it should be free. OpenStreetMap, a nonprofit group whose mission is to make free maps that can be reused by anyone, has some 180,000 contributors who have mapped many countries in varying levels of detail. The maps are used on a White House Web site that tracks community service opportunities and in many iPhone applications, among other places.

OpenStreetMap
OpenStreetMap (OSM) founder, Steve Coast, opened the conference and touched on many, many significant issues. The one that sticks with me: "We trust our contributors." The comparison of OSM to Linux and Wikipedia may make some nervous, depending on their feelings about that operating system and encyclopedia. As a user of both of those things, his discussion made me more confident in the vision and inevitable growth and usage of OSM.

Idea: export the entire data storage of openstreetmap osm into wikipedia on git. Use cached rendered pages checked in. all layers generated by local layers from json data.

Hi all,
I had added a border polygon for kosovo for easy extracting osmosis of kosovo points, the problems were many :

1. shared points with features.
2. duplicate points with other items.

it is finally gone.
osm.org/browse/changeset/2843120?node_page=1

Ideally we would have a border relation, not a way.

more to come. But soon we will have no duplicate points at all in kosovo....
