Carter Lake

Posted by hankcurt on 2 February 2009 in English.

Took a break from working on verifying Tiger Line data today. Instead, I used the Yahoo imagery to trace the outline of Carter Lake. It has an odd shape because it used to be the Missouri River channel before a flood changed the path of the river. This caused the renderers to put the name of the lake over a neighborhood instead of over the lake.

To correct the locaton of the name, I put a point in the body of water and added the name as a property of the point and took the name off of the outline of the lake. If there is another way to deal with this problem, let me know.

Zoo and Botanical Garden

Posted by hankcurt on 24 January 2009 in English.

Tonight I marked the boundary of the Henry Doorly Zoo, and updated the streets in the neighborhood between the Zoo, the interstate, and the rail yard.

On the other side of the Interstate is a large botanical garden. I'm a little unsure what to tag it with. I'm thinking of leisure=garden combined with tourism=yes.

I also ran across a "storm water pond", which is a low area that fills with run-off water during a rain storm and then is pumped out or drained naturally when it is not raining. During dry seasons, there is never any water in the basin and it is covered with grass and low brush. I tagged it with waterway=basin and natural=water along with a tag for the basin's name. This makes it show on the map, but seems to describe an area that would normally be full of water rather than one that is normally dry. There will be many more of these as the city is working on more projects to control river pollution by catching surface rain water run-off.

I'm open to suggestions on these areas

Parks and Rivers

Posted by hankcurt on 20 January 2009 in English.

I added a couple of small parks in South East Omaha today. Also starting tracing the Missouri River bank outline, working north from the Douglas County line. It's nice to see some color on osmarender.

I also noticed that a bridge I did the other day did not render correctly without the layer=1 tag. This is confusing on the osm.wiki/Bridge page. It seems to first imply the tag isn't needed, but further down says it is a good idea if the bridge crosses any other features on the map. I plan to just add it automatically from now on.

Also noticed the freeways and interstate highways around Omaha are a mess. They may look correct, but some have the wrong direction and others have junctions with the wrong ramps or other problems.

Added the new bridge over the railroad tracks and removed the old crossing that was torn out last year. Showed changes to the wastewater plant access due to this construction. Also removed some short streets that were generated from tiger line data but never really existed in reality.
