WTF is going on?

Posted by historybuff on 16 June 2009 in English.

Well, an area that I mapped on paper but hadn't put in seems to have been "imported".

The import gets a giant FAIL from me, if that is what it is. Many streets are disjoint, Names of streets are every block and so on. If this is the new face of OSM, I'll go back to Google maps with all of their horrible warts.

I've only checked one spot. I hope it's not like this all over.

Anyways, to add insult to injury, Potlatch isn't loading the area, so I can't even fix it. I'm not sure if it's because of too many objects, or if there is some bad data, or just server load, or what.

More flying time

Posted by historybuff on 9 November 2008 in English.

Well, I haven't done a diary in ages, but I've been doing tons of GPS traces, and have recently started to do mapping again. Unfortunately, it's just in time for the cold weather, which means mapping will be restricted in scope.

Toronto has continued to fill out, and quite nicely. I have to start mapping the surrounding area a bit, and do some infill to make sure all of the streets are done. It's coming along.

Wow, how time flies

Posted by historybuff on 13 December 2007 in English.

Well, it's been a couple of months and time has zipped by. Toronto is starting to fill out nicely, and not just downtown.

Got to go to the 2nd Toronto Mapping party - that was good, as I got to meet some fellow mappers. I didn't do any mapping until Sunday though, and it's still in a backlog I'm working through.

On the upside, I figured out one way streets (yay!), I'm feeling ever so slightly more confident in JOSM and Potlatch is now looking almost like the main map.
That, and I have a huge stack of sheets with maps drawn all over them. And now, a bunch of NMEA files that I have to convert to GPX and upload.

All in all, not a bad few months.

What the heck?

Posted by historybuff on 30 August 2007 in English.

Ok, So I haven't figured out one-ways.
Turn restrictions seem to be an in-progress thing.
And JOSM is like looking at "the city by night".

I've looked through the wiki for further info on one ways, but no joy yet.

On the bright side, I've filled in lots of Sheppard Ave and Wilson. I have to figure out how to erase a way, because Finch Ave runs from where it really physically intersects Yonge Street along to the 401, parallel to Yonge. Trust me, it's not there, but I don't know how to fix it -- yet.

Toronto squares

Posted by historybuff on 7 August 2007 in English.

I've "completed" 4 full "square blocks" now, I believe. I'm slogging through them in Potlatch, but there are lots of things that aren't clear. I think I've got one ways, but I have no clue how to do turn restrictions, stop signs or traffic lights, so while the map stuff seems to be coming (slowly), the nav pieces aren't complete. I might have to switch to the local tool to get the full effect.

Toronto area mapping

Posted by historybuff on 29 July 2007 in English.

I'm still trying to figure out what the "right" way is to do this. I've mapped the 409, but I'm not sure how to do the ramps, so only the main highway exists.
I'm a bit confused by the current data, because most big streets in the core are labeled "secondary" while similar streets in the east end are labeled primary.
Have to do a bit more digging on this; to figure out one-way labels and how some of the other things should be labeled.
