| The trouble with imports (translated) | Perhaps he should have been checking in pieces of his work as he verified they were correct, instead of waiting to add it in one big chunk. That way other people could see work was being done in the area (even finding his diary from user links in the history list) and made their own contributions on top. Instead, he's upset and OSM possibly suffers (at least in the short term). This is a good demonstration of the differences between "the cathedral and the bazaar" styles of development (see Eric Raymond). In this case, Pieren was trying to use a more "cathedral" style of work in an environment set up for a "bazaar" style. |
