The good people of Staten Island will likely never know how much I thought about the shapes of their pools 😂

> it'll show you the age of satellite imagery, if it's available

Thanks for this tip, I've used iD quite a lot and I never knew about this. Unfortunately few of the images have their vintages labeled.

The Bing Aerial is Oct '22, which is pretty recent. I suspect it's the most recent. I see it as a rectangular (covered) pool, but the circular shape in the NE corner is throwing me off. Might be a hot tub with intersecting geometry? Might be an open pool umbrella? Who knows.

The Esri World Imagery has a clearer, rectangular pool that matches what I thought I saw in the Bing image. Since this pool appears to be installed into the ground, I feel fairly confident it's a newer installation.

Esri World Imagery (Clarity) Beta and Mapbox Satellite both show the oval, above-ground pool that you describe. In my experience these are usually both older than the other satellite image sources, but there are always exceptions.

> I'd expect a fence or something else. To me it looks more like different paving on the ground.

Yeah, I see what you mean. To me the crosshatch pattern looked like the ribs you'd see on a pool cover. Perhaps I was a bit far out on a limb...

> But ultimately on the big G it is clearly visible as a pool.

Not to be smug here but...I was totally right 😉 Thanks for checking my work, I always learn something about interpreting aerial imagery.

Hey MxxCon, thanks for your comments on my pool geometry edits. This was another interesting case, so thanks for bringing it up.

Once again, I was convinced when I was editing this that the pool was once an oval but has since been replaced. When I was working on this project there were a number of pools that had been removed or replaced between when different satellite images had been taken.

In my experience, Bing imagery is often much more recent than Esri or Mapbox Satellite imagery (these were my viable options within the iD editor). In the Bing image there appeared to be a rectangular cover, so I assumed a rectangular pool. Again, many pools were different between images so this did not feel abnormal.

1192623726 was once a round pool, yes! Clearly visible as round in Esri World Imagery (Clarity) and Mapbox Satellite in iD. However, this was one of many pools in this area that had clearly been removed or replaced between satellite image dates. Upon inspecting newer images (Bing Aerial in particular), I'm convinced there is a newer, rectangular pool. I could be mistaken, in which case you are welcome to make the adjustment. Either way, I think it's safe to say the round pool is no longer there.

Cheers,
Jacob

...Brookdale Assisted Living. This appears to have evolved into a mountain bike track, with little foot traffic anymore. It's unclear if bikes are allowed here, but I left the tag for now. Thanks to Alyssa for keeping me company today!

Thanks for catching that wireguy! It can be difficult to see those types of errors in iD. I'll remove these this week

119642403 over 3 years ago

Yes, I did! Thanks for catching that. When I conflated the reference and ways, there was a mess of tags to merge from each, and those two slipped through the cracks. I'll correct them shortly.
