Sometimes Yahoo! background imagery on Merkaartor make a very long time to appear.
I've noticed it doesn't like to be moved when it was still loading, so after a move you have to wait for the background to appear.
Sometimes it is totally screwed so you have to reinit it : right click on the Yahoo!(WMS) layer and select Yahoo!(WMS) from the popup menu.

When tagging a bridge on a road you have to split the way (ALT-S with Merkaartor, the scisors with Potlatch).
A road -------- (1 way)
become --o--o-- (3 way, only the way in the middle receive bridge=yes)

Multilingual maps use name: with for the 2 letters iso code.
But be careful, this is the language iso code (not the country iso code), language iso code can be found here :
http://www.loc.gov/standards/iso639-2/php/code_list.php

So name:ru for russian, name:en for english and name:uk for ukrainian

I've also experienced a crash due to a long recording I presume.
Now I periodically save the data : stop the track and start a new one, better safe than sorry and it's working fine.

The community is small in Portugal, nothing like Germany (or France in my case).
The map grows slowly, we need more help.
To all mappers : take your vacation to Portugal ;)

I use Merkaartor and I love it, it's simple and fast.
The documentation have moved from the openstreetmap wiki to http://merkaartor.be/wiki/merkaartor/Documentation so some part are messy and links are broken.
Important information are there (creating/moving node, way, split, join ...).
But it lacks some information about the process :
- download a small area (with the slippy map or paste a permalink)
- move around (panning) with a drag and drop with the right button
- if the area is not big enough download more (CTRL+SHIFT+D)
- do some editing with the tools, don't forget to deselect the tool with ESC
- and finaly upload your changes
Everything is on the toolbar.

And to not be frustrated again, I've to warn you, it happens some time (but less frequently than before) that Merkaartor crash when you do extensive editing (lot of download and lot of gps track).

I'm enthusiast and I'll start reading it right now !
I've found Packt amazing, offering printed and ebook was the right choice and that's what made me buy this book.

A little wish : it will be awesome if there's any refund to the OpenStreetMap foundation ...
