Regarding the elevation data: If setup correctly, the unit logs to GPX files on the memory card. You can access these by setting the unit to USB mass storage mode, for instance. Files like 20080615.gpx, and these include elevation data.

I don't think it's possible to store waypoints on the memory card, hence the limit. If only we could modify the software running on these...

By the way, I don't think you should expect problems uploading old data with JOSM. It should happily overwrite any changes that happened in the mean time. I believe the 0.6 API will change that.

I know there's problems with uploading GPX waypoints, but I've also heard Potlatch can edit them if you do manage to upload it. The thing is that the GPX upload is designed for tracklogs; in particular, it requires timestamps on the waypoints. I'm not sure whether a GPX with just timestamped waypoints will upload, or whether you have to convert to a route first.

Once you have it uploaded, you'll have to load the GPX file into Potlatch directly. This works through the "edit" link next to the GPX file in your *list* of GPS traces, not the "edit" link on the page of that GPX file. The URL is like osm.org/edit?gpx=123456.

Hope this helps, and if it does work, could you put this in the Wiki?

By the way, I do think adding this information is useful. Some people have started to add house numbers, as well. It's just a huge amount of work.

Wenn du der Meinung bist, deine Gegend kontrollieren zu müssen und niemand anderes dran lassen willst, wäre es sinnvoller, deinen eigenen Datenbestand zu pflegen. Am einfachsten mittels JOSM als einzelne .osm-Datei. Bei Bedarf kannst du die dann gelegentlich mit der OSM-Datenbank abgleichen.

Ich sehe jedenfalls nicht die Notwendigkeit, das Projekt durch unnötige Bürokratie auszubremsen. Ein vernünftiger Revert-Mechanismus (in Arbeit) wäre andererseits eine gute Sache.

Nebenbei: Über etwas schärfere Reaktionen solltest du dich kaum beschweren. Da lädt jemand Daten hoch, die es dir erlauben, der Karte zwei neue richtig gemappte Straßen (mit Namen und alles) zuzufügen ohne aus dem Haus zu gehen. Wohl kaum ein Grund, hier rumzu"kotz"en.

Die gesperrten Gebiete sind ja wohl ziemlich daneben. Mein Vorschlag wäre, deine eigene Karte außerhalb von OSM zu pflegen.

Are you using the "Edit" tab? If so:

The long road is probably just one way, which you'll have to cut into pieces.

Select the road, then select the node where you want to cut it, then click the scissors symbol. Repeat for the longer remaining part.

Now you can select each new way, and should be able to change the value of the name field.

Regarding the area you're complaining about, it just looks incompletely mapped, no?

So drive down the streets on your bike and note the names down. It's what everybody else does (I hope). There is copyright on maps -- as I understand it copying a single street name is not a problem, but deriving some significant amount of our data from non-free maps (even if different people only add one name each) would be in conflict with copyright.

This should be explained very clearly in the wiki somewhere; unfortunately, I can't really find such a page... osm.wiki/index.php/Copyright

Since you appear to know KML well, can you give me your opinion on the following idea:

I'd really like to view OSM data in Google Earth. The ruby osmlib can convert OSM to KML nicely (see osm.wiki/index.php/OSM_in_Google_Earth). Would it be feasible to use NetworkLinks and Regions with osmlib-generated KML tiles? I imagine running osmexport to generate KML tiles of different zoom levels similar to the way mapnik generates png tiles. That model should be able to scale to Google Earth users everywhere viewing OSM data, I hope.

Just to comment on GPS accuracy: My Garmin often claims around 4 or 5 metres, but is regularly off by 10 or 20 metres, and has on occasion been hundreds of metres off while claiming 5 metre accuracy.

That's awful... But do keep the original names in as old_name.

The easiest approach might be to convert your KML to GPX, then uploading through JOSM. Perhaps converting the GPX to a data layer will work?

Alternatively, you could create a .osm file suitable for uploading through JOSM, see osm.wiki/index.php/OSM_Protocol_Version_0.5 for the format. To create a node with JOSM, it should have attributes lat, lon, a negative id and action=create, I believe. I'd suggest creating an appropriate node in JOSM without uploading, then saving, which should give you a nice template.

To include a new street or path, it's usually sufficient for a start to set the 'highway' and 'name' tags, 'oneway' if applicable.

If you download an area through JOSM, you can save it as a .osm file which you could use later to restore the data. Also, history for all objects is stored in the database (they're not actually deleted), though there is not yet a good method for mass undeletion.

Some people think this is the right way to do it (see osm.wiki/index.php/Yahoo): Setting a highway tag without surveying supposedly creates a false impression of completeness.

If it still doesn't show up, is it possible that you added a way which isn't tagged as a street? There should be a tag like highway=residential on the way you added. (If you extended an existing way, this shouldn't be a problem.)
