Hey Raymond, one of the dams you added, Idlewild on the Big Thompson river was washed away by the 2013 flood and there are no plans to replace it. The reservoir is also gone. The whole Big Thompson Canyon was dramatically altered in 2013, and US34 is still undergoing reconstruction.

I posted this question to the tagging mailing list to get input from the wider community. I would have cc'ed you, but I don't think I have your email address. You might want to subscribe to that list if you are not already in order to participate in the discussion and explain your point of view.

Raymond, Yes, the elevation information is very useful for peaks, but it belongs in the ele tag, and in most cases, is already included in that tag. We should not tag for the renderer. If you would like the elevation in feet to show up on the standard rendering, perhaps submit a pull request for the standard style, although I am not sure the maintainers are willing or able to have country specific rendering and the rest of the world pretty much uses meters. thus- no problem, great to meet another OSM person interested in the mountains! Did you just summit Capitol in the last few days? I did back in 2012. Very sad to hear about the events on that mountain this year.

I will probably undelete the original Knife Edge and trail up the trail above Capitol Lake to preserve the history, and then merge with your work. Also, GPS tracks in this area are probably more accurate than the imagery (extreme terrain distorts imagery).

Thanks for the edits in the Capitol Peak area.

You may not know this, but it is customary in OpenStreetMap not to delete the work of other mappers, but instead, to modify or extend it, thus preserving the history of the map. There was already a path/trail partway up Capitol which you deleted (way: 356132381). You also deleted the "Knife Edge" a notable part of the route up Capitol.

Hi Raymond, I noticed that you are editing the names of peaks to include the elevation in feet. You probably were not aware of this, but the name tag is for the name only[1]. Elevation should be placed in the ele tag[2]

Your detailed survey (actually looking inside the church) is most commendable. I bike past several times a week. I I will keep an eye on things there, as well as on their website to make sure they are still active. It is a small church, so I suspect they do not have full time staff, and thus there will only be people there on Sundays, or during Bible study one evening a week.

48625329 about 8 years ago

I noticed that you marked Foothills Baptist Church as "Abandoned Church." Perhaps you drove or rode past it during the week when there was no activity. I just rode my bike past it this morning (Sunday) and it was quite evident that it is active. I also checked their website, and they have recent sermons posted.

Lou, Thanks for contributing to OSM. I am interested to know why you are tagging groups of trees as "leisure=park". In OSM these are normally tagged as "natural=wood"

It looks like you left your keyboard unattended and someone has been playing using your account. OpenStreetMap data is used by people around the world for real applications, in particular this data in Haiti is being used to help eradicate malaria from one of the poorest populations on Earth.

Kevin, Thanks for your quick reply - and for making OSM one of the most up to date maps there is. Even though I am local, I have not been on that trail in a few years (as evidenced by my comment).

I just checked it against the Strava Heatmap and it does match it, so it is most likely correct.

The location of the Sawmill Trail matches neither the Bing Imagery nor the GPS traces that have been uploaded to OSM. Is this correct?

29000364 almost 10 years ago

US 34 in Big Thompson canyon was largely destroyed in the September 2013 flood. It's reconstruction does not exactly match what is currently shown in the Bing imagery. For example, the section immediately east of the town of Drake is no longer three lanes.

Thanks for adding Pineridge Natural Area in Fort Collins! Having those natural areas makes for a much better map.

Hi Joel,

Welcome to Colorado USA! We certainly could use more mappers.

> Please feel free to add detail.
I already have ;-) BTW, thanks for respecting my existing work around the old ski area at Hidden Valley.

> The polygon I have added here is extremely coarse
That is the way to do it, start coarse and add detail... unlike what I did at Hidden Valley.

> I find the JOSM Improve Way Accuracy tool particularly effective at doing this.
Yes, JOSM, and the Way Accuracy Tool are outstanding! I am in the process of trying to learn how to develop plug ins for JOSM.

> Also if you have any ground knowledge,
Are you familiar with Mapillary? I have started adding photos to Mapillary for RMNP. For example: http://www.mapillary.com/map/im/Y_ramljQYRLjUaJ-NL4jQg/photo Also, there is a JOSM plugin for Mapillary.

> ...labelling of National Forests in the US
There has been endless debate on the US mailing list about this. I don't agree with it, but the current practice seems to be to use all of the tags that you mentioned on each National Forest. National Forests in the US are "managed" but they are not necessarily "forested" and even if they are forested, they may not be managed for timber, but rather for livestock grazing, mining and various forms of recreation (in some cases the trees that exist have little commercial value). Many of the ski resorts in Colorado are on National Forest lands. The National Forests are no more protected - and in some ways less protected - than private property. To further complicate things, there may be Wilderness Areas within National Forests that *are* protected. By law there can be no motorized or wheeled vehicles, and no permanent structures in these areas. Finally, National Forests have "private in holdings" - that is private land, but over which the National Forest Service has some jurisdiction.

Nice job on adding land cover in RMNP!

28864782 about 10 years ago

They were all areas. None of the areas contained a node tagged amenity=parking. In many cases the area was simply deleted - it was not replaced with anything.

28864782 about 10 years ago

I am interested to know why you deleted some of the parking areas I added to US 36 in Rocky Mountain National Park. I have first hand, recent knowledge, that they are there. I would appreciate the courtesy of a note if you believe any of my work should be deleted.

Thanks for the great edits to the road network. Great job with the complete tagging. Is there a way you could preserve the history of a way when editing? I.e. modify instead of delete and recreate? I am sure that S. Saint Vrain Avenue existed in the database before 2/15. That history is an important part of OSM.
