There's no written policy but first and foremost the rule is "no advertising", i.e. anything with a "description" tag that tells us how the excellent lawyer has been helping their clients for a decade should be deleted on sight. Another frequent problem is bad or missing tags, or POI placement that doesn't match the map (middle of road etc). The "hiding our traces" element where the SEO firm creates throwaway accounts for each of their clients is also discouraged. Feel free to drop a message to data@osmfoundation.org when you encounter SEO stuff that seems to have a system, or if you want to do some detective work yourself, email the office/shop that is being advertised, tell them you're with OSM and someone has been tarnishing their reputation through adding unwanted advertising, and whether they've recently signed up with some SEO plan?

Please do not create historic boundaries on OpenStreetMap. They unnecessarily complicate the editing process for others. Check out OpenHistoricalMap for a project to map historic boundaries and other historic facts.

Why did you remove the end_date=1947 from this boundary in this changeset? Is the "Geographical region of Italy" (that includes Corse and Istria) more than a historic boundary?

Hello ninjamask, please be more careful when you apply such large-scale fixes. It is obvious that you have *not* really checked these 10,000 objects that you "fixed" here or else you would have seen that a lot of it is really broken data that does not belong in OSM (e.g. osm.org/way/496174581). With careless "fixing" like that, you obfuscate the problems and make a proper repair or deletion more difficult! Please, in the future, only make edits to objects when you have actually looked at the object you are editing - don't just select 5000 objects with JOSM and click some "fix this now" button. If we wanted that kind of fixes, we could just run a script over the whole database but we don't - errors like the ones you fixed here are often an indicator of deeper issues and need to be looked at properly.

I have deleted only street names contributed by user chdr, not those contributed by other users. The user has been proven to have used Google in some situations and this nourishes the suspicion that he used Google in other areas too. If he had used a different source, it would have been easy for him to tell us; we asked him several times.

Als Quelle hast Du "ESRI World Image" angegeben, obwohl das Gebäude darauf nicht ausreichnd zu sehen ist. Dass es hier zwei 100% deckungsgleiche Polygone gibt - eins mit building=yes und eins, dank Dir, mit office=lawyer - ist Dir auch nicht aufgefallen. Durch Deine gutgemeinte Arbeit verwischst Du die Spuren schlechten SEO-Mappings und machst es anderen schwieriger, diese Edits aufzuspüren und zu entfernen. Ich hatte Dich neulich schonmal auf einen ähnlichen Fall aufmerksam gemacht. Vielleicht solltest Du einfach etwas weniger tun und dafür etwas gründlicher?

Hallo Geozeisig, Du hast insofern recht, als dass Dein Tagging nicht "dem Wiki entgegenläuft", zumindest nicht mehr oder weniger als das, welches bergaufsee bevorzugt; beide Arten sind im Wiki dokumentiert. Letzten Endes ist es Geschmackssache, wie man es macht - ähnlich wie z.B. die Frage, ob man Landnutzungsflächen an Wege "anklebt" oder nicht.

In solchen "Geschmackssachen" ist es nicht hinnehmbar, dass jeder großflächig seinen Geschmack durchdrückt, denn dann kämen wir aus den Editwars nicht mehr hinaus. Es muss also zumindest regional ein Konsens gefunden werden, und niemand sollte sich anmaßen, Objekten, die er selbst gar nicht erfasst hat, seinen persönlichen Mapping-Stil aufzudrücken.

Die Berliner Community hat sich weitgehend darauf verständigt, das "PTv2"-Mapping (mit dem highway=bus_stop auf der Straße) zu verwenden. Wenn Du damit nicht einverstanden bist, steht es Dir frei, das mit Deinen Kollegen in Berlin zu diskutieren, z.B. auf der Mailingliste oder beim Stammtisch. Wenn Du es lieber nicht diskutieren willst, auch gut, aber dann musst Du die Finger von den Bushaltestellen lassen.

Du hast natürlich recht, dass man im Normalfall bei OSM nicht vorher fragen muss, bevor man etwas editiert. Aber in einem Fall wie diesem ("hey, die Berliner haben offenbar keine Ahnung, wie man Bushaltestellen richtig mappt, ich änder das mal eben, wieso vorher mit denen besprechen, das Wiki gibt mir ja recht...") geht das nicht, da muss man sich schon an der Diskussion beteiligen.

Bitte sieh künftig davon ab, Bushaltestellen auf Deinen "Geschmack" umzuändern, und akzeptiere, dass Deine bisher vorgenommenen Änderungen an Bushaltestellen wieder rückgängig gemacht werden.

Hello Nordpfeil, it would be great if you could spend a little more time on setting proper changeset comments. "Details added/updated" is a changeset comment that probably applies to 99% of all edits made in OSM. The changeset comment is there for others to understand the nature of your edits. Perhaps you could try to save a little less frequently, and then use a comment like: "Improved roads and piers at XY harbour" or so. The same is true for your "source" specification. Which sat image? Other mappers say whether they used Bing or DG or something else.
