Less roads == better data?

I’ve been adding a ton of minor roads and tracks to the west coast of Vancouver island, and I’ve been discovering road access to provincial parks which previously had not routing.

It was a couple years ago that a bus full of kids got stranded overnight on logging roads travelling from Bamfield to Victoria and got lost due to a wrong turn. If they had rural roads mapped out and on a gps, they wouldn’t have gotten lost.

Note: Google is now mapping these minor roads these days. (They didn’t a few years ago)

So.. I’d prefer it if these roads didn’t get deleted. I added a bunch of roads by my home town for hunting and fishing purposes. The overgrown logging roads may turn into path/generic when it is passable by foot or bike only.

"Sierra Mountains"?

Wikipedia has 5 different sierra ranges. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sierra_mountains

not like we should import data from wikipedia though..

Say what?

So, we can have a coffee shop put themselves on the map, or a restaurant, but if someone works out of his house you have to pounce on him?

What about a B&B, that’s someone working out of their house as well.

I think the edit should be reverted. If he wants to have a business name on his house, then let him.

Canvec has some crappy rail lines - please don't delete and import.

I’m sure that doing an import is a huge task, but for BC, the roads and rails are currently in place and we’re not gaining much by re-importing them again.

University of Cambridge map now live

Other searches I performed were ‘coffee’ - no results. ‘roof garden’ - no results, even though rendered on the map.

searching for a ‘pub’ gave results of ‘public health’… not what I was looking for :)

University of Cambridge map now live

Tried it out on my mobile phone. I like the nav button.

The thing I remember about being a student first time on campus where I went to school is asking “Where is room 1400 of SW2 building”
On your site’s search bar in the phone browser, searching for ‘hps’ did not give a result.. so I think the search engine could use ‘alt’ names and nicknames of places.. even locality names such as the names of any plazas or nicknames of places ie.. “the gherkin”

I’m sure that students, night class students, visitors will have similar destination needs. On the android phone.. the geo: tag allows a user to navigate to their destination. I’m not sure if it would help with your mapping app.

If you have big buildings, then room numbers would help. If the buildings are small, then room numbers aren’t needed. The school I went to had large buildings which were amalgamated out of smaller buildings, so your class could be down any one of several corridors.

The Monkey Puzzle pub switch2osm!

Cool stuff. on your navigate page, you could also have a ‘geo:’ tag so that smartphones can navigate to the address.

geo:49.403825,-122.668671

You can create a qr code that can be scanned by smart phones using a geo tag (works on android)

Also, the tel: link works with smartphones as well, so you could have a tel: 555-1212 link as well.

Building with two different names. How to solve

the names page in the documentation show how to label things with international names, local names, and official names.

Nexus 7 for mapping?

The GPS should be ok on the newer tablets. On my HTC Amaze, I was able to get the same number of satellites and signal strength as my Garmin Oregon 450 using a Chartcross gps diagnostic app. You’ll find that a trail gps to be more rugged and will have longer battery life.

For recording tracks, ensure that there isn’t a setting which locks you to google known trails and tracks.

Pissed off!!!!

You say the bot was working correctly, but I have seen traces deleted where everyone who edited or split thye the trace accepted the terms.

New Lower Mainland Imagery sources

I think that your Whistler potlatch2 link at http://imagery.paulnorman.ca/tiles/about.html

http://${a|b|c|d}.imagery.paulnorman.ca/tiles/bc_sea_2_sky_2009/$z/$x/$y.png should really be http://${a|b|c|d}.imagery.paulnorman.ca/tiles/bc_whistler_2009/$z/$x/$y.png

“Contributor terms: Accepted almost 2 years ago “

Robert, the redaction process deleted a lot of my traces as well. I have no faith that the redact bot was working correctly.

New TriMet Trip Planner released today! (uses OSM)

I like the sliding scale.
The meaning of ‘bike friendly’ isn’t too clear.

Is this a redaction bug?

Or the people can check that their bot is working correctly.

Is this a redaction bug?

If this way 50313444 was split from a previous way to the west, then it would account for rev 3 of this way in WBSKI’s changlog of osm.org/browse/changeset/6824872

My suspicion is that there’s a glitch in the redact bot which assumes that some nodes are ‘bad’ based on a date of edit and Yahoo and the date at which a user accepted the new license.
ie, if I didn’t accept the license until after these were traced out.

Is this a redaction bug?

Well, I can account for the changesets for the track above that segment ( osm.org/browse/way/50313444) versions 2, and 4. and the way below that segment which I drew: osm.org/browse/way/89546425

If the way was split, then the unsplit way would have been seen in either of these 2 changesets.

changesets: osm.org/browse/changeset/6656135?way_page=1 osm.org/browse/changeset/6824872

In my opinion, the way was never touched by anyone who did not accept the new terms of service.

Is this a redaction bug?

Also, here’s another example where Wbski (accepted) traced out a track with Yahoo, then I traced some stuff with Bing, then the whole thing gets redacted.

osm.org/browse/way/92818746/history

Is this a redaction bug?

No, that’s not the case.

Some lakes I added got redacted as well. I traced those lakes from Yahoo imagery back in 2011. Are we deleting everything which was traced from Yahoo imagery?

osm.org/edit?lat=49.99804&lon=-123.13485&zoom=15

Is this a redaction bug?

also.. way osm.org/browse/way/50313448/history is this because it was traced from Yahoo imagery?

Is this a redaction bug?

interesting. Well, I think there may have been a bug. osm.org/browse/way/31158977/history also redacted, the list of people editing that map include mbiker’s imports and myself on that road as well.
