Added about 18 km of roads, after managing at last to pair an old bluetooth GPS with my mobile phone with TrailExplorer, I can stuff the gps into a saddle bag, phone in pocket and drive around Paris...
Not too many problems with JOSM - generally painless, but some problems in finding out how to colour a road (that's ok I think now), and more importantly, how to correct a wrong node without deleting 6 miles of mapped road, or correct intersection road names without the complete collection of linked nodes taking a new name... (that is not ok for the moment).

More mapping tomorrow!

Hello,

I am a student at the University of Newcastle and am planning a mapping weekend for Newcastle Upon-Tyne in December. Dates are TBC but I was thinking 8-9th or 15-16th December. The main reason for the project is for my dissertation and I would like to map an area of Newcastle in detail (University campus or city centre for example) along with other areas. The dissertation is based on GPS for mapping, with OSM being the focus.

This is the first stage of proceedings as I have just signed up to the OSM and the forum. After feedback from here I do plan to set up a Wiki page.

If interested please contact me or get on the OSM forum!

Thanks!

I went back to Ware this weekend to carry on where I left off last week - started by finishing off the little bit in the far north west that I didn't do before, including an unintended diversion along Poles Lane that wound up with me emerging on the old A10 somewhat to the north of Ware...

After that I started work to the east of the A1170 and, after getting somewhat confused about exactly what area I was working on wound up doing a broad stripe along the north edge of town and then down the eastern edge almost as far as the B1004 so the outline of the town is pretty much fixed now.

One or two more trips will probably be needed to fill in the area enclosed by the A1170 and the area done in this trip.

I was trying to think of a more original title but it didn't happen.

What did happen, however, is that I managed to fix my puncture. It's my first ever and with not having anyone around to help I'm worried it won't last. But I pumped it up to 45psi (markings say max 50) and it still seemed fine after cycling 7 miles over various surfaces (tarmac, gravel, mud, stones) so I'm happy enough. Just hope it still works when I want to use it tomorrow.

Overall while I've been here it's been fairly successful. I've mapped about 32km, about 12 of which was on the bike. The other 20 or so was visiting my aunty and taking her 3 dogs for a walk in nearby woods (the paths account for about 2km with my estimate of the area of the woods about 3km).

Unfortunately I can't upload the data as I do it since I can't actually get online. I've uploaded some using my grandmothers phone line but the rest may have to wait. I almost managed to get my laptop online using my mobile but prepay customers on O2 are very limited in what they can actually do. DNS lookups were about the extent of it.

Anyone know of a network that allows prepay customers to get their laptops online? It's only an occasional thing for me so a contract is hardly worth it, whereas carrying a spare sim is hardly a burden. Answers on a postcard please.

See my previous post for the location of Stalham (yesterdays data should have rendered by now on the tiles@home layer).

Based on the Yahoo Satellite Imagery, a city plan and GPS data, I'm mapping the city of Sarajevo, capital of Bosnia and Herzegovina.

Now that JOSM no longer depends on MinML2 ( http://josm.eigenheimstrasse.de/ticket/174 ) and icedtea ( http://icedtea.classpath.org/ ) builds on debian unstable I can finally edit OSM without having to touch any proprietary software. Hurray!

If you have debian unstable and are willing to experiment (I recommend a chroot) you can try the following:

1) Add "deb-src http://lindi.iki.fi/lindi/debian destructive main" to sources.list
2) sudo apt-get update
3) sudo apt-get build-dep icedtea1.3
4) fakeroot apt-get --build source icedtea1.3
5) sudo dpkg -i icedtea1.3*.deb
6) sudo update-alternatives --config java and choose /usr/lib/icedtea1.3/bin/java
7) sudo update-alternatives --config javac and choose /usr/lib/icedtea1.3/bin/javac

Again, this is totally experimental, use your own risk etc. I hope icedtea (and josm too!) will enter official debian soon.

If you are paranoid you want to check that the included icedtea-1.3.tar.gz and openjdk-7-ea-src-b18-16_aug_2007.zip match what upstream distributes and then read through debian/rules (it's fortunately not too long). Finally, the sources should be signed with my GPG key AA6D106B that is also signed by some of my friends: http://webware.lysator.liu.se/jc/wotsap/wots/latest/paths/0x135EA668-0xAA6D106B.png

I'm in Stalham, Norfolk, this weekend to help my Aunty with a leaflet to explain what the ZimBO Fund is about. She was so moved by her visit to Zimbabwe that she wanted to set up a fund in order to support some of the people, including two AIDS orphans - Benson and Oscar, hence the Zim-BO - she met there.

While here I thought I'd attempt to map at least some of the town.

Today I've been and surveyed several residential streets that make up one area (by my estimation, about one quarter) of the town. I think that's the fiddly bits out the way. The rest is basically long, straight roads with some (large) areas of green.

Unfortunately that'll have to wait. I got back to the house and went in for a quick drink. When I went back out to put the bike away (it was dark at this point) I noticed an odd squeek as it moved. Checked tyres - front was flat.

My Grandmother has a puncture repair kit so I won't be stuck for too long. Not quite how I intended to spend Sunday afternoon but nevermind.

hi there,

I'm just starting out on using OSM. Having said that i need to learn quickly since i have to make use of the data! I'm in my final year at Aston University, Birmingham, and for my final year project, I'm tasked with developing an application for a mobile platform (using JavaME) to use the OSM data.

Ultimately I'd like to try and get it routing a small area, say the campus? Or sutton coldfied since there seems to be plenty of map there.
Also, having it record the data if not present would be great!

If you can help or suggest resources to look at to find out more on the form of the data i can retrieve the map in etc, please contact me!

It's all new and getting this knowledge is key to getting a good start on the project!

Keep up the good work!

A gorgeous day to be out for a bike ride, though I wish I'd brought my tourer because there are more hilly bits than I'm used to in the flat lands of Cambridgeshire. Lots of cycling between villages, and not that much mapping considering the time I was out for.

Completed the last three small villages in this unmapped pocket of South Cambridgeshire: Great Chishill, Little Chishill and Heydon, together with the nearby Hertfordshire village of Barley and Essex village of Crishall, and their connecting roads.

So now, all South Cambridgeshire villages are done in an arc from Linton east of Cambridge round to the south and up to Kingston in the west. However, there is some detail around the Imperial War Museum site at Duxford and in general along the A505 there (including the hamlet of Crishall Grange, done only from npe so far) remaining. Further east we have Bartlow, West Wickham and "The Camps" to do; further west, lots of stuff along and west of the Royston to Huntingdon Road (Papworth, Bassingbourn etc), Highfields-Caldecote, Bourn, and villages north and west of Cambourne. North of Cambridge, there's the Swavesey, Over, Rampton area.

Been looking at tidying up bits of Stafford, where I have friends. Haven't been back since I started mapping, but found GPX trails which nobodies done anything with - have made ways with these/NPE/local knowledge. Hope I haven't trodden on anyones toes. Also found some odd glitches - looks like user:Selispix made lots of nodes, but no segments/ways connecting them. Have started correcting these.

Most of the Bohnenviertel and red light district in Stuttgart is now mapped. I went down there after work yesterday with the intention of mapping the area, but shied away, feeling very conscious that I was getting some strange looks, stopping on every corner to note down street names. It was a little earlier in the day today so it didn't feel quite so intimidating.

I also filled out some more bits of the Innenstadt while I was in town. There is an anonymous mapper in the centre as well... if it's you, maybe send me a message so we can coordinate?
