Many South African suburbs are combating crime by closing roads with 2m tall palisade fences. Where pedestrian gates are present, they are often designed to stop anything larger than a human being from passing through them.

So I had to abandon my mountain bike on a few occasions at one of these gates and map a little bit on foot. On other occasions I would find a spot where I can lift my bicycle over the fence (often scratching myself and / or the bicycle). If that failed, I would cycle a few extra kilometers to find the vehicular entrance.

On Sunday, when confronted with another of these gates, I discovered a really good technique for lifting the bike over the fence after I passed through it : Left hand on handlebars, get the bicycle vertical, right hand on the saddle, left hand over the top of the fence, let the bicycle rest in an inverted position with it's saddle on the crossbar of the fence (freeing the right hand), and voilà.

Used some data from our Sunday morning ride to Saffron Walden.

I've done a bit of investigation into using OSM data in my phone-based tracker. It looks quite feasible but I don't know whether it would be re-inventing the wheel and whether I have better things to do.

Something I could do relatively easy is make the tracker a tool for collecting GPS data for those that don't want to buy a full GPS device.

Instead they would buy a ~£25 bluetooth GPS. Those with phones such as the Nokia N95 with integrated GPS might use an experimental variant I am tinkering with that uses the phone's own GPS.

Have a look at this

Trying to extend the National Cycle Route 61 from St Albans via Hatfield towards WGC. Unfortunately, soon after entering Hatfield to begin the new mapping, I managed to lose the route with the result that I spent 20 mins randomly cycling through Hatfield trying to pick it up again. Managed to find it again for a short while, then lost it. While trying to pick it up for the 2rd time, I found part of NCN 12 so contented myself with extending it southwards. All this cycling my be good for my health, but bad for the OSM cycle map :(

I've added some more town roads in Armidale (NSW) - it's beginning to look like the beginnings of a town map now.

I've finished the 200km or so of road joining Armidale to the coast, some roads west to Barraba, and the road south from Uralla to Walcha. I've replaced the landsat-based New England highway north and south of Armidale with GPS-derived tracks as they were more up to date (the satellite images must have been a little out of date?).

I added the road from the New England Highway to Black Mountain (near Guyra).

[Nothing in mapnik yet; some in osmarender; other still to be rendered].

Just as there's a waterway Droitwich Ring (Worcester & B'ham->Droitwich Junction->Droitwich Barge->Severn), there's a cycle route one, too - and they share a fair bit of the way. We did the latter today.

It's a bit unfinished (NCN 45 and NCN 46 both go between Worcester and Droitwich but don't yet connect), though less unfinished than the Droitwich canals - where I'm a bit worried that there still doesn't seem to be any evidence of on-the-ground work.

NCN 45 looks like it could be really lovely. Needs further investigation.

I am very proud to declare OSM as the first online mapping service of the world what can offer streetdata of one of the 10s northernmost towns in the world.

I brought the data yesterday by fighting for my life against polar bears, heaviest snowstorms, -30°C and strong winds in the barentsea :-)

Unfortunately I can't draw the airport because there are no images from satellites available.

I hope, the area will rendered soon ;-)

Please note: Most streets in arctic towns does not have names!

I'll try that again: it doesn't look as though I can delete mistaken diary entries!

I was given a Garmin Edge 305 for Christmas and have now mapped many of the most important roads in the east of Preston while out cycling. Gaping holes remain, of course, but this OSM malarkey is motivating me to cycle to places I haven't previously visited.
