first of all, thanks for all replies.
within one week i managed to map two suburbs of Cologne from previously completly white to (i hope) nearly complete.
I am quite curious how this will look rendered with Mapnik.

Some words about technical stuff, as mobile equipment i am usigng a bike, a Royaltec RGM-3800 data logger, a clipboard, a pencil and some white sheets of paper, sometimes printed OSM Map-fragments.
There are some problems with this equipment:
- paper gets wet and unusable if it is raining.
- printed OSM-Maps are limited to 1200x1600 (my max. screen resolution, i am doing screenshots). Is there any way to render crisp b/w postscript maps?
- the GPS-Logger-Readout-Software is M$-Windows only, attempts to readout the new GPS-Tracks running this software on my linux-box with wine produced some badly corrupted data, e.g. colonia_20080114_3.gpx (will be deleted). I am working on a linux-client to read the data from the GPS-tracker. For the meantime my tracks will be uploaded with some delay because i have to ask someone else with a M$-Windows box to download the data.
One more question: Police vs. Police/SOS-Telephone. Is there an amenity like "SOS-Telephone" / "Notruf". This telephones have one button only, if you press it, you get connected with the police. How do i put those in the map?
Data loss in Manila 20080116
Hi,
Apparently some ways around Metro Manila have been randomly deleted. One user have admitted he might have done some of the deletions (unintentionally). I want to ask other OSM editors in Metro Manila to look around their mapping
area to see if some of their created ways were also deleted.
Please provide a link so that we can revert the changes.
cheers,
maning

Align streets to photo. South of Highland, east of Waterman, north of Evans, west of San Gabriel and Valencia.
There hasn't been a lot of noise about this so it might have gone unnoticed, but thanks to steve8, the mapnik map has nice new changes.
Tunnels are now being rendered for railways and motorway, trunk and primary roads; tracks are not as prominent anymore in lower zooms as they used to; and some new landuse areas got color. Oh, and we have railway bridges! Since these changes are just a few days old, your area might not be fully re-rendered yet.
In osmarender, bobkare has implemented automatic icon placement for areas, which saves us putting in the extra node for the icon.
I use my Nokia N95 for capturing tracks using the Nokia Sports Tracker software (http://research.nokia.com/research/projects/SportsTracker/). I was just checking for updates and noticed that from version 1.6 they have added support for photo placement where "photos captured during recording are automatically positioned on the track".
The other good thing about NST is that it will continue to run in the background if you start another application. This allows me to take voice notes using the built in voice recorder while recording a track.
I just returned to Openstreetmap after a couple of weeks absence and I see that a lot of the data I put in is now missing. Many of the roads I entered have been removed although in some cases the points still remain as isolated green dots (in Potlach).
This is quite disappointing. Was there some kind of system crash? Am I doing something wrong? If it continues to happen, then its pointless putting data in here.

Last friday I was out again on my bike. As I discussed earlyer, I have finally found a way to record audio and GPS at the same time with my mobile phone.
Tonight I finished a JOSM modification which enables me to load audio into the map. While I'm hearing my own voice, I see a spot moving across the map, which is always exactly at the position in which I recorded the audio.
There's also a feature to play/pause and seek with a slider bar (which is not easy cheese in Java). It still has lot of bugs, I think I will submit the patches in a week or two after some more testing.
This way, I can include much information into the map which would be lost without audio. I got familiar with mentioning every post box, bus stop, street name, hotel and many other POIs.
But what's even cooler, when I now get across a crossing, I can easyly say "here's a crossing, road xyz to the left at 9 o'clock, a cycleway to the right at 2 o'clock, and the oneway street Abc ahead of me". While the GPS shows just a straigt line across the crossing, I can put road stubs in the right position and a not-too-wrong angle into the map. I don't even have to speed down!
If you look at this place in Wernigerode, it looks like a lot of maze driving and visiting some places three times. In fact, this data comes from a mostly linear drive trough.
Sadly I remember that there's a real live waiting for me... Can't wait to record new audio tracks!

I've added several hundred kilometres of highways aroud Armidale.
I added a couple of roads west to Bundara, Barraba and Manilla.
I added the coast road east of Armidale to the Pacific Highway.
The north and south portions of the New England Highway had been manually traced from Landsat via potlach. I replaced the section north to Glen Innes and south to Tamworth with GPS-derived tracks as the latter were more accurate and showed more recent road realignments.
I've added some more residential roads in Armidale. I don't have any strategy in place to systematicaly cover the area but, rather, given that my work place is north-west of town and I live out of town on the eastern side, I've just been zigging and zagging and taking alternative routes as I head to or from work, or head into town to run errands.
This has worked well so far but now I need to do some small residential streets than resemble a maze of little twisty passages or even a twisting maze of little passages. I guess I need to enter such a maze and use the left-hand rule for traversing mazes - and see what happens.

Habe ueber Weihnachten etwas mehr von OHZ aufgenommen. Da gibt es aber noch einiges zu machen.
Heute noch drei Strassen und den Fussweg durch den Wildpark Poing.
Went out another 3.5 hours for nearly 40 km of track by bike. Yes, taking all these photos takes it time. But now I have circled Grafenberger Wald, made the connection to Ratingen and mapped my first complete town: Hubbelrath. Oh, well, has about 50 to 100 houses, I guess, so that was easy.
While I'm waiting for my new GPS, I've been doing some mapping of Oman from memory and Yahoo imagery. The aerial photographs of the Muscat capital region are fantastic!
Hello to the mappers from the region that have uploaded highways and GPS data. I hope you don't mind me getting involved.
From west to east, Phelan Rd crosses Hwy 395, becomes Main St with no break.
Fix Highland Ave. Date St. Mirada St. Blythe St. 29th St. Valaria Dr.

Looking at the region just north of the M8/M73 junction, I noticed a lot of ways that didn't connect to each other.
