Promoting OpenStreetMap as a Leisure Class Activity

It is a shame to hear it is so difficult to encourage people to help, and without finding how it could benefit them?

E.g. in the UK Amazon delivery drivers use OSM data for addresses. That is a good way to get people to fill out their house on OSM. Similar could be said for Uber or traditional Taxi companies.

But finding the right people who can accurately create this data can also be hard. I have always thought about visiting my local “Geek retreat” cafe and asking if anyone there is interested. Or even “adventure” youth groups, who may already be teaching similar skills to children with maps.

Mapping Northampton!

There is someone very active in southwest Northampton who is a brilliant template for what can be achieved, especially how they handle roads, crossings, curbs etc.

Northampton is a large place, and will be a big task, as it has some very empty areas.

Make sure to check out the osm wiki for help, and we are lucky in the UK we have “cadastral parcels” which you can use to perfectly lined up the satellite images with the real world!

Best of luck!

Game-ification of OSM Edits

I think that Street Complete is an amazing tool for mappers, and I have always had great things to say about it, especially with how user friendly it is.

I have always wanted to introduce it to local Youth organisations like Scouts. The hard part is verifying the data provided is any good. Even when I concentrate hard it can be difficult to keep track of what house number you just added!

I hope you find some local groups near you!

Amusement park modifications

@benoitdd Some nice tools. Good to see there is a very active member in my area! (RAC_UK)

Re-mapping of 45° Nord Entertainment Center

Looks good, the height data and tagging all those building parts must have been a challenge. I love how F4Map Demo always renders buildings with no height data way taller than they are in real life. I measured (and added) the height of the factory i work at, and it was woefully low compared to everything else around.

Even though it is nice to have the accurate placement of the shops inside the store, I am a big fan of the little details outside the store and the greenery.

Heaps of Stuff

Very nice. There is an aggregate plant near where I live, and I have always wondered how i would possibly tag the heaps they have, though I would say they are quite small, so maybe not as heap worth as the work you have done here!

Its almost amazing that something reasonably common has gone undefined for such a long time.

Begining of a mountain of a task

Thanks for the kind words, Maybe I am fortunate that I have so much to do in my area, when many people are struggling to figure out exact lane features on their local roads!

@RAC_UK - Starting from the North where the houses are big and spaced out!

@benoitdd - I will try and remember to tag #UKQP in any of my changesets. That’s a big Quarterly task!

@apiregrain - That Cadastral layer looks FANTASTIC! It will be a life saver for figuring out how many terrace houses are in a row. Strangely though, my property boundaries don’t show up on it, yet some of the parking spaces for nearby flats do :’(

Lets hope having properties to tag will kickstart people in the Area using Streetcomplete?
