With some time, I decided to improve the map of the city [1], railway station and the salt flat of Uyuni [2].

Uyuni

Uyuni is a city in the southwest of Bolivia [3]. It was founded to house the first largest railway station and major railway junction. Almost every road in the city are separated by a center field. Salt flat of Uyuni is the world’s largest salt flat with a pool of brine, which is exceptionally rich in lithium.

The Map

This city will be part of the competition Dakar, I added the much information as possible … since all the previous information was made by tourists.

I removed all previous roads and started from scratch to map. I added most of the hospitals, schools, gas station and places of common use. In the vast majority of the buildings I added 3D tags.

TODO: Points of interest, the surface & number of lanes of the roads and others.

It looks great. How long did it take and what was the metodology that you used ?

@baditaflorin: All I did in two month (10/nov to 07/jan), but the part of editing in JOSM took me one week for salt flat of Uyuni, one week for road/railway routes and 2.5 weeks for city of Uyuni.

It took me a long time to collect official information. Here in Bolivia, there is little official information available on the Internet must be requested in writing to the office of each ministry (transport, tourism, health) in the capital La Paz… located 400km away from where I live (Cochabamba).

In some cases, I resorted to articles published in blogs offering additional information. It helped me a lot the information (map of the city) that was published on the grounds of the Dakar competition.

Regarding methodology:

  1. Collect minimum information (official, wikipedia, photos, diagrams, my and friends gps traces)
  2. Download a full version of the intervention area (osm file)
  3. Establish probable schema tags and examples of well tagged places using the tool overpassturbo.eu
  4. Get the displacement of the satellite aerial imagery using “openstreetmap gps traces” and stored in the website imagery_offset_db (josm plugin)
  5. Edit the map using this information
  6. Verify that the tags are correct using the filter of tags with JOSM
  7. Synchronize the possible new changes by other osm users (turist) and upload data

Repeat this for each category: natural areas, road routes, railway routes, ways and points of interest in the city.

B^)
