New Calming Traffic Island

Zapsal Bill Ricker 8. 5. 2021 v jazyce English.

I saw a new traffic calming traffic island announced on Twitter so i took a small detour and added it. I think i’ll add a Note to review it when new imagery is available.

The neighborhood has a number of other traffic calming measures, speed humps and new lower “Neighborhood” 20mph speed limit. Nice. I didn’t survey or change all the reduced streets, just the ones i drove.

Breaking news - pardon the pun -

The lift bridge on US 1 Bypass between Portsmouth NH & Kittery ME is stuck in the up position. Permanently.

It initially stuck “down”, but they managed to get it up one last time for a ship that wanted to exit port, by some expedient, but that killed it. It was scheduled to close permanently, to be scrapped, in just 10 weeks (November, at end of tourist season), with the under-construction parallel replacement-span to bear the same name due to open Spring 2017.

NHDOT & MeDOT considered fixing it one last time but after checking if the jam, a problem they’re rather too familiar with, was a hard or easy jam, the cost for the short remaining life was deemed excessive.

Reference MDOT SML

After waiting a day for a local to do so (after official declaration that permanent closure was effective immediately), I have applied change-set 41726297 to mark the bridge’s 3 ways -

  • access=no foot=official bicycle=no
  • note=CLOSED - mid section of bridge is a lifted roadway stuck in up position 2016-08-22. Permanently closed 10 weeks early, will not reopen. new bridge due to open spring 2017.
  • (except: foot=no, level=4 on center span stuck in UP position; if you’re official enough to get up there, you don’t need OSM to find it! )

For the under-deck rail-crossing Way 150771571, v11 I only gave it the same ‘note’ above, it didn’t have access= routing tags, it’s rail (and for special federal trains only these days i hear).

I have also added map notes, one closed, referencing the above change-set on existing center span, and one open, at approximate offset of the new span, referencing the MDOT project page as a TBD next spring.

I’m open to constructive criticism on better tagging … or fix it and share why ; e.g.,

Mapping on vacation - Montréal

Zapsal Bill Ricker 15. 8. 2009 v jazyce English.

I didn't fix much in Montréal, but I did a little while there for WorldCon.org .

My hotel's street wasn't on the map, had to add that! Plus I named Place d'Youville and added Rue Normand, and some Historical=. May do a bit more as i sift thru my photos.

I very much enjoyed having the CloudMade QA map on my Garmin while there.
Having the GPS report km and kph while the engine was reporting mph & mpg was a nice flexible use of technology.

A garbage truck tipped from one alley onto parked cars in a lower alley.
http://blogs.townonline.com/brookline/2009/06/30/garbage-truck-crash-on-beacon-street/

The MassGIS import to OSM had this alley as Unnamed Road, although aligned to wrong building, but Google didn't have it at all.

I have aligned it per Yahoo imagery, and split the lower parking to a second way layer=-1, although it won't go under so -0.5 would be more accurate. Since news photo shows pavement, MassGIS tag surface=unpaved reset to surface=paved.

The GNIS label for Peak name=Meeting House Hill imported with altitude 0 which was correct for its position betwixt the yachtclub, beach , and liftbridge of Dorchester Bay. But not right at all. Apparently that flaw is in the source dataset, as several websites list Meeting House Hill as 0m with coords in salt water.

Improvements executed in phases over several days after last mapping party -
#1464376 moved peak label from Bay to Hill
#1473379 added (approximate) altitude
and a POI for the namesake meeting house First Church Dorchester
#1510867 adjusted peak position, left altitude as correct,
after field survey with barometrically calibrated GPS*
added a playground
and removed footpath through Overlook, as a private property fence has appeared below the school yard,

* Calibration is easy since the roads around Dorchester Bay are single digit altitude ... in feet. which makes them closer to 0m contour than 5m.

Will likely have to remove the Meeting House Hill Overlook public property area entirely.

Closing the OsmBug that I opened when I first spotted a hill in the bay.

Putting Norm's Place on the map

Zapsal Bill Ricker 13. 6. 2009 v jazyce English. Naposledy aktualizováno 20. 6. 2009

The home of the late Norm Paulin, prematurely retired executive chef of Smith College, has been endowed in his memory as sheltered accommodation for employee-clients of ServiceNet, in North Holyoke MASS.

I never met Norm, but through his brother, it feels as though I knew him too. It is my pleasure literally put Norm's Place on the map.

Cyclmap positions the label further away than needed but it lets one see the full polygon

POI for mapping party

Zapsal Bill Ricker 10. 6. 2009 v jazyce English.

Sunday at Mapping Party - Moved the Cambridge police (they moved Dec 8th) and added mapping party site with JOSM. Also worked with Lars to debug my framing of TopOSM.

Monday - moved Meeting House Hill POI from Dorchester Bay to Meeting House Hill where it belongs. Also did a little outreach with a couple Boston bloggers.

Tuesday - added Altitude for peak moved to its hill, and POI for the namesake meeting house on the hill.

Using OpenLayers

My embedding of OpenLayers with the canonical three OSM layers plus dynamic markers is finally live at the 10th Annual Eastern Mass ARRL Field Day Directory. Thanks to local OSMer Lars
have a Mass TopOSM server linked as an alternative to CycleMap, a welcome gift since the commercial topo sites are no longer linkable.

looking for something else I stumbled upon Step Streets in the Bronx [1], so I left him the QueryToMap search for that feature there [2] . This also which reminded me we have a few such around Boston which should be tagged, and wondered if any had been done [3]. I see one in Jamaica Plain is already so tagged by another local. Add tracking down the others to the todo list.

Fixing oneways

Zapsal Bill Ricker 25. 2. 2009 v jazyce English.

The MassGIS import had oneway streets but whether the were in the drawn direction or reverse was not coded in the source. I found I could OueryToMap for them with [http://toolserver.org/~kolossos/osm/index.php?way=note=FIXME+unreviewed+oneway&node=&relation=&description=&request=Submit&output=osm&bbox=-71.16%2C42.25%2C-71.0%2C42.40] so have been printing maps for field checking and fixing obvious ones (like roudabouts and ramps I use regularly).

And still reverting to Highway=service the NoNames that defaulted to Residential on import, when there isn't some better fix.

U Mass

Zapsal Bill Ricker 31. 1. 2009 v jazyce English.

the Mass GIS import is full of unnamed ways classified on import as residential. Most of these are better classed as Service Road, as most are access or parking ways. UMass Amherst is now clean of such.

Initial attempt at an Area for the university precinct and a few key buildings added, including the tallest building used entirely as a library.

Boston coastline

Zapsal Bill Ricker 31. 1. 2009 v jazyce English.

from the advice of the #osm chat, i dropped the Ubuntu JOSM and reinstalled the latest, so i could get the modern eWMS plugin among other upgrades.

The announcement of a coming Mapping Party caused me to look at osm.wiki/Boston - it
looks like we have a coastline lean in Boston. Chris noted it depends on which renderer, it doesn't show up in the main view. However Coastline viewer http://tile.openstreetmap.nl/coastlines.html?lon=-71.0861&lat=42.3736&zoom=13&layers=B00T was flagging the Malden and Mystic Rivers behind the Amelia Earhart Dam. Seems to me that freshwater on the inland side of a dam with locks
should not be natural=coastline, so i am adding waterway=dam, lock=yes
to the Amelia Earhart Dam and converting the offending coastline
polygons to waterway=riverbank. This may not fix whatever the intrinsic
problem is - the polygons seem rightway round, clockwise wet, the other common issues on osm.wiki/index.php/Coastline_error_checker seem ok. Hopefully Peter's polygon adjustments will help if taking them off Coastline didn't.

While I was at it, I refined some of the PGS coast polys for Malden River and added islets.

JOSM's usage with the api map server's node limit is a serious impediment to working on NoNames (highway=residential to service, mostly) and Oneway FIXMEs in Boston, since it seems we have full nodes everywhere. But it was fun to try with my GPS trace yesterday. If I try to fill in the missing streets at Atlantic Ave with my GPS, I will use JOSM. But for NoNames and Oneway FIXME notes taken by diverting off the commute for CloudMade garmin qa map's red zones, it's Potlatch: it scrolls.

Closed three OpenStreetBugs I had opened - World Trade Viaduct, Victory Rd underpass, Seaport Ln.

And I fixed my mistake using the wrong tag. (see cmt to self on prior)

bridges and non-bridges in Boston

cleaned oneway FIXME's on a stretch of Dot Ave (Dorchester Avenue, Dorchester) and West Broadway area So.Boston. Put the 'cut no cover' "Haul Road" down to level:-1, disconnected from crossing streets, and moved those up to bridge:yes, level:1, and split those streets not reconnected by bridge. And drew forced right hand turn on B Street onto W.2nd St.

Apparently the first priority for a new OSMer in Boston is sorting out the one way streets in the neighborhood. The MassGIS import helpfully tagged oneway streets with a FIXME unreview tag to indicate that it is half chance right, so delete those tags as I check them.

The majority of NoName items from MassGIS load are Service or access:private. A few are extensions, turns, or u-turns of named ways.

I have started tracing the Fairmont commuter rail line, bridges and one station so far.

South Bay Shopping center has expanded since MassGIS data and Yahoo aerial imagery. Adding the new exit precisely may wait until I upgrade to a USB/SD capable GPS.
