More Goonellabah Mapping + road collapse

Biogenesis_님이 English로 2009년 7월 26일에 게시함.

I did some more mapping in Goonellabah today, mainly as an excuse to do some hill sprints on the bike.

Anyway, that's all fairly routine. What wasn't expected was the discovery of a large section of road which collapsed in the recent (~6 weeks ago now I think) floods.

I also did a once-over survey of Kadina Park. There's a stack of benches, covered picnic tables etc in this park but due to lack of time I just did a few of them, the play areas, car access, the foot paths and the soccer field.

Weston Park was also given a very rough survey. Mainly just a footpath and service road with a guess trace for it's border. Surveying of the surrounding streets will need to be done before it can be more accurately plotted. There's several sports facilities in this park which should be mapped out individually too.

I'd guess Goonellabah to be 3 rides away from road completion. I should probably get around to updating the landuse polygons too...

As usual, the history can be viewed here.

Is that something worth putting on the map?
- That there's no bridge over that creek.
Or perhaps just mark it as a through road, as it should be fixed up someday (hopefully sooner rather than later).

I quite like adding lots of detail to parks now - right down to rubbish bins :)
Though I should start using the landuse tags, ... and I should probably learn how to do relations. - Someday I guess.

It looks like you're exploring quite a bit there too :D

Hi,

This is an interesting topic, just how up-to-date should OSM be.

If road works are just for the day then no action is required.
Howeve if road works/Etc significantly alter the routing aspects of a road for
a week or more then (IMHO) OSM should reflect this.

Yeah, this road has been out of action for more than a month and there's no sign of repairs starting yet so chances are the road will be out of action at least until Christmas.

Start a proposal for barrier=washout? :p.

Oh, and it was never a bridge. The creek ran through a corrugated iron tunnel...which is now sitting about 40m away, in the park.

The park across the road from me was dug up for maintenance, and it's still out of action. I've been updating it on OSM as it changes, but I guess that's a benefit of living across the road.

I'd probably replace it with a highway=construction;access=no;, and keep an eye out for changes. :D

Unfortunately I'm only here for another 6 weeks or so and as such can't be around to update the map. Jason Stirk is the next most active mapper in the region, hopefully it'll show up on his radar.

Can you imagine the marketing that OSM can have over commercial map providers? "Updates 365x more often than the competition!"

The last few weeks I've been meaning to go up and see how far it washed. If you're only around for a while, I'll keep an ear out and update it when they've actually started doing something about replacing it.

How badly damaged is the park where the pipe used to sit?

I've also got a bunch of traces to do for the Birdwing Butterfly Park (on the northern side of the pipe), but not the whole park (it's bigger than I thought).

I didn't look at the park to the North of the washout but the park to the South of it seems fine. Well, I didn't see it pre-flood, but the only major issue seemed to be that there's a whopping great big chunk of corrugated iron pipe sitting on the grass. The picnic tables etc were all still intact and there's very little flood debris on the grass.

Oh, and obviously the footway which went under the road doesn't exist anymore.

I'm more concerned with getting the road network finished as that's more important from a "oh wow, this map might actually be useful" perspective as opposed to the "oh wow, this map has so much more detail than any other" one. Basically I want the first impressions of new users to be ones of completeness, basically combat the "pfft, this map sucks, it doesn't even have my street!" attitude.

Anyway, my point is that I'll leave the details for you :).
