When people come across bike racks, what do they put down as the capacity? Do you specify the number of hoops, or twice the number of hoops as you can usually comfortably fit 2 bikes per hoop, one on each side? My regular one I use for work usually ends up with many hoops having 3 bikes and on occasion even 4 per hoop (shows Westminster's cycle policy up against others - a trip through North West London/West End recently amazed me at how many racks there are, and not just near stations!)

I usually count spaces between the racks, but the racks here in Victoria, Canada are mostly of a common design and can really only fit one bike per space.

I put the number of bikes that can be parked there, which is usually 2 per loop. Last night I seen bikes up on rails behind the bike racks, as the bike racks were full on platform 8 of London Bridge station.

The capacity should be the number of bikes that can be parked there - but like Shaun says, I'd suggest sticking to two per hoop at the most!

I took a look at another entry I found that specified it and took a bit of a guess that it was no. of bikes rather than no. things to lock them to, but thanks for all the comments guys as I wanted more of a consensus (the one I found could have been the odd one out or my guess could have been wrong).

These diaries really do seem to get well read and replied to/commented on. Makes you want to post here more to see the encouraging and useful feedback!

Think of it as a perfect world that the council get the demand just right and everyone parks neatly. I would say those loops are designed for two bikes (though a family could chain 5 bikes together on just one side).

Actually I haven't been bothering with tagging capacity yet, and isn't it a bit pointless without knowing the demand at certain times of the day.
