...and downloaded JOSM. So far I'm finding it a bit on the meh side. I'm using it primarily to add relations to the RTC network and a few other tasks (turning multiple-node intersection in a single one is a doozie with Merge node). Mostly I find it unintuitive and slightly overcrowded, and having to download the data constantly because you're running out of the original area is annoying, plus it does some simple tasks (primarily moving on the map) in ways radically different from Potlatch, and some tasks you would think would be simplified by it (why isn't there a "Duplicate relation" tool??) are barely so.

I've been using the duplicate relation function a lot lately while manually importing Australian postcode boundaries so I didn't need to copy and paste or remember all the tags they needed to be tagged with, this way I just alter what needs to be altered.

Scratch it to my idiocy: I searched and searched and couldn't find the damn thing. I'll investigate further another time.

I have been using JOSM since I started as newbie and I received a lot of help from OSM Gurus before I was comfortable applying my newly won knowledge. I cannot find fault with it. I will agree that the learning curve is a little high but once you get the hang of it you'll never return to Potlach.

I think JohnSmith is referring to the duplicate function in JOSM; I too don't know of a "duplicate relation" function in JOSM.
Is there one in Potlach.

You can duplicate anything in the selection list. So just select the relation by going to the relation dialog and clicking the "Set the current relation to the list of selected relations" in the lower-right corner and then do Ctrl+D.

You could also use the search engine to find it & select it, e.g. by searching for "type:relation modified".

JOSM is a bit fiddly to begin with - but very powerful once you know its quirks, and yes downloading of large areas is difficult, but you can always 'download along a GPS track'. The ability to add extra nodes on a way is very useful, somethig Potlatch cannot do. For long trails I find it easier to draw a straight line ( especially on a long road ) between two points and then bend the line into shape. Stick with it as the ability to megrge layers, export the OSM and convert this into a Garmin map ( of potentially a whole city ) is perfect.

Merging nodes, making buildings perpendicular and all the Plugins ( WMS / Edit GPX etc ) are great

There is a learning curve but once you are familiar with the tools you wwill not go back

The other tip is to start JOSM with extra memory ( 512 MB or more if you have it ) ( I will post a diary entry for this ).

Cheers bri
