Landuse boundary question

於 2009年五月10日 由 ClarinetEnglish發表。

As I get going with editing, a question arises.

A landuse area (such as residential or industrial) is often naturally bounded by (for example)a road. It seems logical to me that the nodes which define the landuse boundary ought to be IDENTICAL with the nodes on the relevant road. The should perhaps be THE SAME nodes, so that if the road position is corrected, the land use boundary is also simultaneously corrected.

However, I wonder if such a situation would lead to problems with editing (selecting whether you want the landuse boundary or the road for example) and so I ask if it is recommended to leave them separate. If so, what spacing between road and boundary should one aim for?

Personally, I'm all for snapping landuse (and areas in general) to neighboring areas and ways, but the debate is still raging overall.

Indeed, as everything in OSM there seem to be more differing opinions than contributors, and I am of the opposite opinion here, for precisely the reason you say - it makes it really hard to edit. I usually leave a gap of up to 5 metres so it is distinct in JOSM at a reasonably tight zoom. But its not just for convenience. The way marks the centre line of the road, and roads have significant width - typically about 10m including footway - so it's not actually true to say the adjacent areas coincide IMO.

I find it easier with shared nodes actually, when you know how to edit them (in JOSM).
Middle mouse click (and hold) on the way and a context list will be displayed. Now also hold down the control key (this allows you to let go of the mouse button), and your free to click(select) the way from the context list thhat you wanted.
It's rather complicated to learn but there are lots of things like that in JOSM (and in Potlatch, though I don't use that)

What aggravates me with editing them in Potlatch is that there IS an easy key to cycle through them (the slash), but it will solely work if you have it as a dedicated key (i.e. the numpad), or are using a US keyboard. Hence it is virtually impossible to use this function on many laptops (the bug is known, too).

There definitely does not seem to be a consensus on this. I've read some diary or blog entries where a mapper is angry if people put the landuse boundary on the road nodes, and others where the mapper is angry if people don't.

Personally, I like to put the road way down the center line of the street, and the land use separately at the edge of the street (at sidewalk if there is one), like davidearl says.

That half of the street really isn't residential or retail. But of course, the way being a line and not an area is an abstraction too.

With no consensus, do whatever makes sense to you :-)

Well, the house's lot doesn't really occupy the road and we map the center lines of roads, so the lot's area shouldn't touch the road at all. That's how I view things.

But yes, it is a pain to select the proper way among overlapping ways.
