Pete Masters called our attention on this new feature for communities on OpenStreetMap, so I decided to give it a try.
First thing to say is that it resulted me very confusing, not only the name -as is told in the comments of the original publication- but the sign up process too. Here are some screen captures to ilustrate the process:
This part was easy but confusing. I had to take a look at the URL to be sure I was not trying to create another OSM user. And I had my OSM user live and open in another tab.
I got this screen after finalizing the sign up process. Still confusing because it has the OSM logo on it, I was still wondering if I had created another OSM user.
Here it told me that was already in communities, but it took me a little while to realize that I had to click on the blue “Communities” button. Probably my fault.
After doing that I got this screen. Not so clear to me what to do. I was expecting a list of communities to join. But the option was only to create one. Very fragmenting, communally speaking.
So… I created a community. But I was alone, so I told Andres to join… And he ended up creating his own community too.
In short, an interesting tool that I must continue to review but that I believe needs to undergo a series of adjustments to make it more differentiated and intuitive.

This is only on the development server which doesn’t have any access to the main OSM database, including your user login. The real feature won’t require you to create a separate account.

I have created a new community “Friends of Null Island” with 3 fake members so it will show up in the communities list. Feel free to join and play around with it.
