A new mapping start in New Zealand

Publicado por David Johnson o 18 de Febreiro de 2010 en English.

Well I have recently moved to New Zealand and am living in Carterton, so I have made a start at improving the limited amount of data that there is in this region. I am still waiting for my bicycle to arrive so that I can cover a larger area, but for now I will be doing most of the mapping on foot, to get some more of the missing roads recorded on the map

Just a thought, but before you do too much in NZ - have you seen this page on the wiki?
osm.wiki/New_Zealand

"Before you get too involved in mapping New Zealand, you should be aware that there is a large-scale data import in progress from Land Information New Zealand (LINZ) and the NZ Open GPS project. See the LINZ project and LINZ_Trial_Import for details on getting involved. Once the import is completed (and merged) with your help, you may well want to contribute to detail, but doing so beforehand might be a waste."

Thanks for that, I will have a look at the page and see how I can help

I think the LINZ import is pretty stalled for some reason. My dodgy memory tells me there was either a technical problem or a licensing holdup.

of course LINZ won't import everything, either, so there's plenty of chance to micromap the parts other maps/data don't reach :)

Well since I am not doing much, I thought I would at least micro map the section of carterton in which I live, as there is so little data for this area
