I’ve now been editing Oxford, Ohio for over a year, with more than 15,000 edits in the area and only a handful elsewhere. I figured it was finally time to set a proper goal for my editing: “complete” Oxford by the end of May 2022. For now, “complete” refers to mapping all the buildings, highways, POIs, and landuses, with perhaps some nuance. The details for each of these:
Buildings
By my count, there’s 7 neighborhoods/groups of houses left to map. That’s the most significant improvement from when I started a year or so ago, when we probably had around four or five neighborhoods mapped and only half of the downtown/uptown area. After those, there’s just a scattering of buildings on the outskirts of Oxford left. This phase of the project is nearing completion.
Highways
I have five goals for highways currently:
- Consistent, accurate tagging of paths around campus
A number of paths are vehicle-accessible but aren’t labeled as such. I’m not sure what the proper tagging for those is, so figuring that out is the first step here.
- TIGER cleanup
Easier said than done, or so I hear. tiger:reviewed=no is still on most roads in Oxford. I’ll need to do some research as to what TIGER tags should be kept or removed and such. I imagine the zip tags aren’t too useful.
- Sidewalks
There’s lots of sidewalks around Oxford. I’ll probably map these separately, with crossings. That shouldn’t be too hard, but will take a good bit of time.
- Intersections
I’m not sure about how much work there will be to do here, but I want to check up on things like the turn restrictions and traffic lights on all the intersections around Oxford. Some of this might be survey work.
- Parking lots
There aren’t tons of these, but where they exist they’re very inconsistently mapped. Some work will need to be done to bring these up to standard.
POIs
I have very little experience mapping POIs, but it’d sure be nice to have them all around Oxford. We don’t have too many, so I think this is reasonable, but I’m not yet sure how much work will be involved. This might also require a fair bit of surveying and/or Mapillary browsing.
Landuse
There isn’t tons to say here, but getting good landuse coverage would be nice. I haven’t really looked into this yet, so I’m not sure what all it’ll entail. I don’t think it should be too much effort though.
Bonuses
There’s a few things I’ve been looking at doing but haven’t made part of this May 2022 goal. These are house numbers, driveways, and using data from OGRIP. OGRIP data could be used to update features which are otherwise hard to survey or validate, like hidden streams or administrative boundaries. There’s probably a lot of useful data in there for potential future imports as well.
I hope you found this somehow interesting or useful. I’ll update again when I fail or succeed at my goal. If you’re in Oxford, send me a message, I’d love to meet up and talk, and maybe get another mapper working on the area.

Great! You should also consider help from the community. To do so, I like to create MapRoulette challenges. If you are interested, here are some of my challenges in France: https://maproulette.org/browse/projects/38938 If you want to create your own challenges, you can find all my queries here: osm.wiki/User:Binnette/OverpassQueries Have a nice day :)

Hello! I have been mapping Oxford area as well. My focus is highlighting what areas are bike accessible and which are not (i.e. Private). I have biked 99% of all the surrounding townships and ~ 40% of Butler Co as well.

Awesome! If you have any questions or just feel like geeking out over this stuff, some of us from the Cincinnati area hang out in OSMUS Slack’s
#local-ohio
channel, and some of us are also on the OSM World Discord server.Awennit n Eiim di 6 January 2022 ɣef 02:54
Hello again Minh! I’m quite active on the Discord server, and while I’m on the Slack, I’m not nearly as active as I’d like. I’ll be certain to head over there for any local questions though!
