what to do with the bookmakers under the pylons in Ghana
Posted by Enock4seth on 4 May 2021 in English.Above is the coverage of 3 months of contributions by one mapper using MAPS.ME :/ and have added ONLY shop=bookmaker
beneath power=pole
.
Looking closely at this contributions, I concluded the mapper is either an employee of Ghana Grid Company or a contractor. He/She is probably collecting some internal data on each pylon power=pole
, might be useful to OSM? not sure about this.
What have I done?
- I have commented here, here and also send an OSM message.
- I have also transformed some of these bookmakers where there are no
power=pole
andpower=line
in OSM already AND changedname=*
tonote=*
, see #103352102 in case the user responds (IMHO I don’t think these translate into a meaningful OSM tag though)
Next steps…
- Delete nodes where there exist
power=pole
and movename=*
tonote=*
(reason stated above) ELSE repeat #103352102 - Ask on talk-gh [at] openstreetmap [dot] org for anyone who could connect with the mapper
- Delete all
note=*
after 3 months? Kindly advice…

You’ve commented a couple of times (here), they haven’t replied.
If you’d like the DWG to send them a message that they have to read before continuing to edit, let us know.
Also, it might be worth explaining what OSM actually is. They’re using MAPS.ME and may think that they are adding personal bookmarks in there.
Cheers,
Andy (from the DWG)

For some pylons the mapper has added amenity=bank or amenity=bar instead, so its not only shop=bookmaker. Maybe point the mapper to openinframap.org, where ref # and other parameters on pylons could be shown if they were mapped. But first it is necessary to establish communication with that person. I’m not sure if maps.me users get to see OSM messages, so getting the DWG involved would really help by making sure that the mapper notices something is wrong.

could very well there’s a small business beneath. pretty common in developing countries i think. although non-responsiveness of the mapper is a sign that there may be not.

Thanks all for your comments,
@Someoneelse: Sure I will get in touch with DWG right away, as there are new contributions… my private OSM Message took care of explaining the details of OSM and how to prevent the current situation of their bookmarks ending up in OSM
@lyx: thanks for the heads up +1

Interesting oddity. When I use OSM Tracker I tend to use the “bus stop” key as a generic waypoint, I wonder if this is what these Maps.Me users are doing. I note that they are all using things near the start of the alphabet: once you’ve selected one as a personal convention, it’s quite likely to continue using the same thing.

@SK53 It’s probably the case, Maps.me doesn’t allow to modify existing items anymore. And creating notes is not easy, you have to create a feature, and add a note on it…
I guess Maps.me is the wrong tool for what they are trying to do.
