Changeset When Comment

Hi dannykath,
Is this the only changeset of rimantsjana that you reverted? I am trying to remove all the fictitious edits but am getting a few conflicts for some that have been reverted--it'd be a great help to know which ones have already been done.

Hi human890209,

Thank you for your confirmation of source. In JOSM, before you upload, the source tag is at the bottom of the upload window (here :http://i.imgur.com/uTc0DrU.png). For things you survey in person, you can write "survey". Or if you use the default Bing satellite imagery, write Bing. Just make sure you do not use or list a copyrighted source like you did here. We cannot modify source tags on prior edits, but your confirmation is sufficient for them.

Thank you,
Ethan

Ethan

Hi Hepuricika,

I wanted to follow up from my comment a few weeks ago. Can you provide some more information about your edits in this area? Is there really a monument named Destroyed Pine Tree? And a house named Circular House? To an outsider, these look like they were possibly added falsely for one reason or another, but I am not familiar with the area. Please let us know.

Thank you,
Ethan aka FTA with the Data Working Group

human890209,

I am asking once more if you can please comment on the source of these changes. You have listed a copyrighted source that is not compatible with the OpenStreetMap license. I previously commented over a month ago on osm.org/changeset/43317272. If you do not reply back with more information, I will have to revert and redact your edits.
Sincere,
Ethan aka FTA with the Data Working Group

Hi Mudgirl16,
You have started adding some things that exist--good! Please only do this and not include fake objects. Those pollute the data and will result in a block if you continue it. There are plenty of houses and stores that are missing that could use your help! Also one final tip: only add an actual name to an object if it is truly named that. It is okay to leave grass or footways unnamed...but only add them if they are real!

Hi and welcome to OpenStreetMap! Please make sure you are mapping things correctly as they exist on the ground. For example, you changed osm.org/way/308379090/history from a baseball field to a cafe. If you have any questions about mapping, don't hesitate to reach out.

Happy Mapping,

I can work with Joshua to try and restore some of this locally-mapped data. If any of y'all have any questions, please do get in touch at data@osmfoundation.org.

Landuse and landcover are established as things that can 'belong' in OSM given their usefulness in many different disciplines and applications, regardless of whether they are named or simply describe what is literally on the ground. In fact, some areas of Europe are nearly completely covered with landuse designations. So I think the distinction is between data that is stale, was imported a long time ago, and is of questionable quality--and data that was added by a local mapper. I'm not going to make a judgment about the import data as to whether it should be removed or not (many very old imports probably should be reviewed), but good data that has been added by someone with local knowledge and is not fictional should be retained (e.g. map what's on the ground, verifiability, don't map for the renderer: osm.wiki/Good_practice).

Hi, I think there's two different situations going on here. First, Georgia (US state) seems to have a large amount of general landuse data that was added dating back to 2009 (e.g. osm.org/changeset/1264461). I can't comment on the quality of this data with a cursory glance, but it appears to contain only a few limited types. It's a very old import and was done before there were policies and data review. Kirbert, that seems to be what you are mainly focusing on when you talk about the camo across the state of Georgia (e.g. osm.org/#map=14/33.7335/-83.9244). Second, aside from those, there are edits made by Joshua that were not an import but rather added based on knowledge of the area, such as some of those that have been deleted here.

Argh you beat me to it! I thought I was going to get to be the person to add this construction :). Also, I'm not sure if iD did this automatically--but if not, oneway=no isn't usually required for streets as it is assumed to be such without a oneway=yes tag. No major issue with adding it, but it can just save you some time in the future.

Hi Elder Fraire,

Thanks for your note back. It's really awesome that you are doing this surveying and adding the data! I find that so enjoyable about OSM.

The reason I originally commented was that you had listed a copyrighted source in your changeset source tag in JOSM. So, just make sure your source name matches what you actually used to avoid that confusion in the future.

Take care and Happy Mapping!
Ethan

Hey CroutonBoy,

You've been adding some great local knowledge to the map since you joined--keep it up! We needs mappers like you from all over the country. That said, when you add fake data, it pollutes the database and degrades the real data you've added, so please don't do that. Let me know if you have any questions about the project or how to get more involved!
