The OSM Mapnik tiles are 256 colour PNGs to improve their size.
The tile server is CPU bound and currently bandwidth usage is not a problem.

Namibia does look damn impressive.

Hope you had fun collecting the GPS logs.

planet.osm is compressed using pbzip2, you will likely be able to get slightly faster decompression speed using pbzip2 instead of bzip2.

The OpenStreetMap Mapnik Layer Tile server has been overloaded for a few weeks now. Sysadmin team have moved some faster disks around to the tile server which should improve the situation in a few days time.

I have a "fun" problem... When using JOSM with OpenGL on my nvidia video card, it semi-randomly bombs out, not fun.
