Completed riverbanks of Canal de la Marne au Rhin, Alsace, France. Quite easy by using the cycleway on both sides from Saverne to the giant ship lift at its end. BTW, what's the tag for ship lift / Schiffshebewerk?

Given that a ship lift in this case is simply a special type of lock, I would tag it as that. Maybe instead of lock=yes, use lock=lift? In case it's a lift for carrying out repairs, maybe one should tag waterway=dock + dock=lift?
Just some ideas.

It is not just a simple lock. Watch this: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Saint-Louis-Arzviller_boat_lift
lock=lift is not bad, but I'd rather tag it kinda "manmade".

Here: osm.org/go/0B9VFgLi-- is another one.
I noticed that this one has simply been tagged as a canal. I don't think that is right. To me, a lock is something that moves ships from one level to another. Manmade is not a bad idea. We probably need to distinguish between (vertical) ship lifts (example: osm.org/go/0GMea1tDd-- ) and inclined planes (as they are called). The latter may actually be tagged as a railway (that is what it is).

You should use the cadastre which is far better than using the cycleway on both sides of the canal.
